Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community. - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding |

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
Among the glorious spring events that I could "count on" in the past has been the cycle of flowers blooming.
In spring I always "knew" that the snowdrops bloomed on March 1, the crocus on March 15 and the daffodils and forsythia took their turn in early April.
This year has been an anomaly; for me an unwelcome anomaly. The spring blooming season has been delayed.
Now the long longed-for crocus are opening their beautiful, sleep filled eyes in mid-April, at the same time as the daffodils. They have arrived in their own time-or Mother Nature's time-not in mine.
One message for me is that, whether hoping for social change or hoping for change and growth within myself, some things will happen in their own good time and will ignore my insistent schedule for them.
This is humbling.
It is good to be reminded sometimes that the universe has its own pattern, its own rhythm that ignores my desires for it. It is good for me to remember that I am less a free agent than I pretend, more acted upon by the world around me than my ego sometimes wishes.
But there is also peace and comfort in that thought. I should do all that I can to make the world a better place, but in those proper instances when I can let the world be what it chooses to be, and let people be what they choose to be, then my life is calmer and better. |

News from the Children's Religious Education Committee As you know, Laurel Whitehouse, our Director of Children's Religious Education (DCRE), has resigned as of the end of this church year. We will miss her. Laurel has been wonderful to our children and our congregation in so many ways in the last five years. She has helped to update and strengthen our curriculum; she has told illuminating and moving stories during the stories for all ages; and she has integrated social action, world religions, earth-centered traditions into the study of Unitarian Universalism for our children each week.
The DCRE Search Committee has been formed to post, interview and hire a new Director of Children's Religious Education. They did a great job gathering information about the skills needed for the new DCRE and the job has been posted. The Children's Religious Education Committee (CREC) plans to welcome the new DCRE and facilitate learning about the CRE program at First Church Belmont. We also plan to fill the administrative gap that will occur between Laurel's departure and the new DCRE's arrival. The Nominating Committee has recently helped to recruit three wonderful new members to the CRE Committee. Our Committee now includes nine intelligent, well-rounded, and thoughtful church members. They are: Wendy Conroy, Tony Fitzpatrick, Patricia Garcia, Lyn Hamer, Karsten Kueppenbender, Sandy Nayak, Jennifer Roderick, Jennie Staples, and Gerri Strickler. We are grateful for their participation and work on the committee.
In the next year, as a committee, we hope to support a sustainable Children's Religious Education program that serves the needs of our children, parents, and congregation as a whole.
Sincerely, Jennie Staples, CRE Co-Chair |
Easter Greetings from our Partner Church
Dear Friends in Belmont,
We would like to wish all of you and your families a blessed Easter and spring holidays this season! In Désfalva, this time of year we worship on three consecutive days, inviting guest ministers to preach, and ending with a communion ceremony on Easter Sunday during which we remember Jesus the man, his teachings, and the manner of his death.
Thank you so much for your Easter gift. I have already bought cooking oil and distributed it to the poor of the village. Everyone was extremely grateful and thanks you for your unfailing generosity.
The scholarship students all did well this past semester, so I distributed the next installment of their scholarships, all but the two college students, who are still away. I'm pleased to report that although two students will be graduating this year, there will be two new qualified 9th graders taking their place next year; one of them is the son of Enikő, whom you all met this past September when we visited.
Thank you also so very much for the lactase for Sanyika. He is doing very much better and it is much easier for him to cope with dormitory food now.
We would love to see as many of you as possible in 2015 - you oldsters as well as some of the congregation's youth. Please think about what kind of project we could do together, and let's plan it!
With all best wishes of the season, Tündike, Tünde, Sanyika and Sándor! |

ALL-CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE, MAY 3 NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Saturday, May 3 is our important public day. A male volunteer presence is especially welcome for the crowds we expect, but help from anyone allows the Sale to run smoothly. And packing up goes really quickly with a big crew. So please give some of your time on Saturday. By signing up beforehand at http://vols.pt/yG1e22, or on the boards in the Upper Gathering Hall, the Committee is able to plan ahead. Volunteers for 2 hours at the Sale may find fantastic bargains for their own use at the pre-Sale! Thanks in advance!
The Rummage Sale not only supports the Window Fund, the work of the Partner Church Committee and Social Action Committee, but it also funds various church purchases such as the commercial refrigerator in the kitchen and the automated external defibrillator - AED - two things that maintain our well-being! |
