Update: UUSC Affairs
This month, the representation to the UUSC from First Church (its place of origin) has changed. After being the sole UUSC local representative for seven years, Jim Landfried has asked Downing Cless and Alice Trexler to serve with him. Other team members are still needed, so please contact Jim Landfried if you can join in this effort. Jim Staton will continue to advise and Bill Zinn to be a link to the Social Action Committee.
UUSC has a list of so many impressive projects that only three are highlighted here. See UUSC.org for more information.
1. Thanks to our members and supporters, the UUSC-UUA Philippines Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund has raised more than $880,000 to support survivors of the devastating storm. Many areas of the Philippines are impoverished and plagued by human trafficking which is a concern to UUSC.
2. The Haitian earthquake occurred four years ago on January 12, 2010. UUSC is proud of the progress made with Haitian partners and communities, including the passage of the Assessing Progress in Haiti bill in the House of Representatives last month. Supporters should use this fourth commemoration to advance justice by contacting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at 202-224-2158. Tell him that you support the Assessing Progress in Haiti Act.
3. July 24th marks five years without a raise to the federal minimum wage, and UUSC has developed a timeline for action between now and General Assembly. UUSC members need to raise a moral voice for food workers and ensure that the tipped minimum wage is included in every discussion of workers' justice. UUSC hopes to see our individual actions coalesce into a movement for justice at the federal level. - Alice Trexler for the UUSC Team |

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
As most of you know, during the Sunday services on January 5 each person present was given an envelope that contained a $10 bill. Each person was then asked to use that money in some way that would do good and to report back to the congregation on what they had done.
This money was available due to a very generous contribution by an anonymous donor in the congregation. Thankfully we had guessed just right on the number of people who would attend-I have been afraid I would run out of envelopes (that means there are no more envelopes to give out.)
The first few cards describing how the money was used have been returned to the congregation. I am pleased to say that people are using the money well.
I would remind you to write two things on the cards you return: first, what you did with the money, and second, how it felt for you to do that.
In the weeks to come, we will report on some of the donations during our services and in a few weeks we will also have a display of the returned cards in the Upper Hall.
This is a great event for our congregation. We will see the beauty and the bounty of generosity.
And I want again to remind us all that our ability to give these gifts to others is a gift to us from someone in the congregation, someone with a great heart. Let us be thankful to them for all of the good works that we accomplish through their gift.

Parish Board Update
At its January 13 meeting the Parish Board voted to move forward with a new Membership Database solution for the church. This initiative, which has been nearly three years in the planning, will provide a valuable new tool for our congregation, staff and committee work. The new solution will be implemented over the spring and summer. We wish to thank the committee members who have worked tirelessly to bring this vision to fruition: Beth Westlund, Eva Patalas, James Hencke, Lauren Corning, Lauren Crocker (chair), Miriam Baker, Robin Hughes, and Rosalie Kerr.
The Parish Board is beginning its budget deliberations and will devote most of February meeting to discussing priorities for next year's budget as well as over the next five years. We will present a final budget at the annual meeting in May.
The Parish Board has invested considerable time in addressing a growing problem of obtaining sufficient volunteer teachers for our RE program. Despite repeated appeals, many classroom slots remain open for the spring. In a separate part of this newsletter, Laurel has appealed for substitute teachers. The board is working closely with the RE Committee to review the program and make whatever changes we need to put it on a more sustainable basis.
The Parish Board has posted its December approved minutes on the downstairs bulletin board next to the elevator. January minutes will be posted next month.
Our church would not be able to function without so many hard working staff and volunteers. Thank you. Jeanne Widmer, President
