Welcome & Announcements:

Dear First Church Friends,

Since the wonderful visit from our friends from Désfalva, Sanyi Szentgyörgyi (Rev. Szentgyörgyi's son) has had two months of invasive testing for a stomach ailment. Much to everyone's relief, it is not serious; he has just developed lactose intolerance. However, it is very difficult to get dairy-free products in the area, so he was strongly advised to take lactase supplements regularly. Unfortunately, our friends can only purchase lactase in Germany and in Hungary, and the expense is prohibitive. We can help. Please bring donations of LACTAID supplements (or any equivalent brand) to the Partner Church table during the Holiday Fair (Dec 15). Buy some treats, sign a Christmas card for our friends, or record a video greeting, and drop off a package of lactase! Thank you so much for your help. -The Transylvania Partner Church Cte

P.S. We prefer donations of the actual supplements, since it will be difficult to buy a large quantity at once. However, we gratefully accept contributions.

Picturing Our Church Community: 2014 Photo Directory Info

Life Touch Photography will take portraits for our 2014 directory during Thursday to Saturday periods of January 2, 3, 4 & 16, 17, 18 in the Church Library. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire professional photos of either a formal or more spontaneous nature, and every person/family who attends a photo session receives a free directory and 8 x 10 portrait. So, bring your musical instruments, hobbies, or pets for unique individual or family images. Click http://www.securedata-trans14.com/ap/firstchurch1/

Our church directory is an essential tool for communications and community building, so we ask everyone to make a photo appointment right away. Special offers: members age 60+ receive 20% discounts; those who furnish a phone number when scheduling on the website (used for reminder calls) receive $10 off; and those who bring a food item(s) for The Grow Clinic to their session receive another $5 off their purchase. The Value of Darkness

Rev. David M. Bryce

9:00 & 11:00 Church Service

Childcare for infants and young children

(For weather-related Service and Children RE class cancellations, please check 617.484.1054 x250.)

Let us value the darkness of this season of the year. Darkness can be a time of rest and quiet. It can also be a time that holds its own activities and dreams and spiritual value. Let us celebrate it not as time that leads to new light, but as a time of its own.

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior MinisterRev. David Bryce

I just returned from a meeting of the Belmont Clergy where, among other items, we talked about the recent Belmont Interfaith Thanksgiving service and about the Belmont Religious Council -- which cosponsors the annual Belmont Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast in January and sponsors the Thanksgiving service and Belmont Serves and a biennial youth service trip.

We are so fortunate to live in a nation and to be part of a town in which interfaith conversations and events are welcomed, encouraged, and actively pursued.

Participants in the Interfaith Thanksgiving service included people who were Congregationalist, Lutheran, Latter Day Saints, Jewish, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Episcopalian and others.

We can overlook just how remarkable that breadth of cooperation is. It was not that long ago (less than four hundred years) that Puritans in Massachusetts -- our direct religious forebears -- chased out or hanged people for being Quakers.

How wonderful that such persecution is in our past. At least, state sponsored and official oppression is in our past.

If we can build upon that cooperation, this town, our nation, and our world will be a better place.

In the days and years to come, I hope that many of you will participate in Belmont Religious Council events. This interfaith work is surely part of our calling as a religious community.

Music Notes from Alfa Radford
GORGEOUS POINSETTIAS to the choir, soloists, and orchestra for an exceptionally beautiful rendition of Vivaldi's Magnificat in g minor at the Christmas Music Service Sunday, December 8. It was, as always, a perfect way to welcome the season of love and light! And those glorious trumpet descants are still stirring my soul.
CHRISTMAS ROSES to Teresa and John Howe for hosting a delightful lunch/party.

Holiday Fair

The 5th annual Holiday Fair will be held this Sunday, December 15 from 10am-1:30pm in the Parish Hall. Come to the Holiday Gift Fair and buy gifts that give twice. Experience the pleasure of knowing your purchasing power is really working to help people in so many ways.

Below is information about one of the organizations which will be represented at this year's fair.

Eastern Service Workers Association (ESWA)

Established in 1977, Eastern Service Workers Association (ESWA) is a free and voluntary membership association run by and for Boston's service workers, temporary, domestic and other low-income workers and their families. Through the self-help efforts of their members and community volunteers, ESWA has organized a year-round, 11-point Membership Benefit Program to help meet the immediate needs of their families while they organize together to fight for long-term solutions to poverty conditions caused by lack of living wages. Membership benefits include emergency food, clothing, preventive medical care and non-emergency dental care, legal advice and more.
Holiday Gift Program Reminder...

Please remember!! Bring all holiday gifts to church this Sunday, December 15. Please don't forget because gifts delivered to church after 12:30 on Sunday may not make it to their intended destination! Tables will be set up in the lower hallway and you can leave gifts there. Please remember - do not wrap the gifts and please attach the cards you were given to the gifts so we know where they are meant to go. Thank you!

Winter Brochure is Here!

The Adult Programs Committee knows that winter may be a time for some people to be inside more. With that in mind, we have created a variety of programs to tempt you to come to First Church or stay after church. They include programs on Racism and Prejudice, Shame and Moral Courage, Art and Creativity, Spiritual Renewal through Poetry, Music in Our Lives, Spirituality and Sexuality, and a three-part Transcendentalist Series highlighting Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman.
We hope you'll be challenged, stimulated, provoked, enlightened or moved to want to tell us that you might have a subject you'd like to explore in the future. Or perhaps you'd like to join the committee to help create the programs. If you are interested, contact Debbie Dobbins ddobbins@uubelmont.org or Lillian Anderson landerson@uubelmont.org

A NOTE ON THIS YEAR'S CHRISTMAS OFFERING

In the cold and darkness of this time of year, we light candles to celebrate warmth and joy. So let us light candles this Christmas and with the words of Howard Thurman bring in love and kindness as was found so long ago in that manger in Bethlehem.
Candles of joy despite all sadness,
Candles of hope where despair keeps watch,
Candles of courage for fears ever present,
Candles of peace for tempest-tossed days,
Candles of graces to ease heavy burdens,
Candles of love to inspire all our living,
Candles that will burn all year long.

Christmas Offering - We invite you to consider two special gifts for the Christmas offering: A Christmas gift to the Charitable Projects of The First Church ("Xmas Charities") or to The First Church ("gift"). The charitable projects include the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee special crisis relief fund for the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, Grow Clinic which serves infants and toddlers diagnosed with Failure to Thrive, and TBD. Please note on the memo line of your check "Xmas Charities" or "gift."

May all the blessings of this season fill your hearts with laughter, merriment and joy. We look forward to seeing you on Christmas Eve.
