Caring Connection
The Caring Connection is a group of Church members and friends who provide support to members of our community who find themselves in some difficulty and need short-term help. Please let us know if you could use some assistance, or know of someone who would benefit from our support. Contact: Laurie Graham at caring@uubelmont.org or Susan at the Church, 617.484.1054 x 201. |
Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community. - Nancy Davis, Parrish Dobson, Martha Moore, and Martha Spaulding |

Grow Clinic! Grow Clinic!
Did you know that you contributed over 200 bags of groceries this year to families served by the Grow Clinic? Do you know what a difference YOU made in the lives of infants and toddlers carrying the diagnosis of Failure To Thrive and to their families? Did you know you're the absolute best congregation? Sending our heartfelt thanks to you.... Catherine Claypoole, Kathy Crawley, Jay Balloffet, Julie Graessle, Allan and Marcia Morgan |
Long Overdue End-Of-The-Year Thanks!
First Church Family, be PROUD! You purchased 53 Second Friday Coffeehouse Season Tickets this year, a whopping all-time record level of support to our ten beneficiaries, to your friends on the Committee, and to our wonderful performers. From the bottoms of our hearts, we thank you, Your Coffeehouse Committee: Richard Curzi, Lauraine Dalton, Kathy Dunlap, Patricia Garcia, Monte Grob, Jim Hall, Roger Miller, Anne Selman, Lanier Smythe, Jim Staton, Jim Sugarman, and Deborah Youngman. Have a great summer, and we'll see you next season! |
June 30, 2013 Year End
If you have not already done so, please submit your pledge payment as soon as possible for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 so we can close out the year. Please keep in mind that many of our church expenses (including payroll) continue through summer. It is helpful if people complete this year's pledge as soon as possible and continue to make pledge payments over the summer in order to ease the cash flow during those months. Thank you. |
A Reminder from the Treasurer
Expense reimbursement forms should be submitted before June 30. Thank you.

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
I hope you agree with me that this has been, yet again, a very good year.
Our staff has continued to do a wonderful job and Lillian Anderson has fit right in as our Adult Programs Advisor.
We had another good year as a teaching congregation with Sarah Gillespie as our student minister, and I hope that at some time in the future we will be able to have another student minister.
Remember that we are a year-round congregation and although they will be on a different schedule, we do have a wonderful array of lay-led services, one every Sunday throughout the summer.
Summer Schedule
I will have regular office hours through the month of June.
I will be on vacation for the month of July and have arranged for other UU ministers to provide pastoral care coverage for that time. This list (summer pastoral care coverage) is being provided to the Parish Board, to members of the Worship Committee (one of whom will be at each of the summer Sunday services) and to Susan Street. You may contact any of them for the names.
During the month of August I will not have office hours (officially I am on Study Leave) but I will be on call for pastoral care concerns and for meetings if committees or other groups need my presence. August is my preparatory time when I plan out my work for the year -- e.g., sermon topics, including hymn and reading selections; thinking about the training programs that are needed in order to refresh different groups; and I do much of the studying and writing necessary for this. I also do more reading than usual, reading which may or may not find its way into sermons. And I take time for contemplation, for reflection and for being present to the natural world in ways that fill my spirit. The best way to contact me in August (as, indeed, at any time) is by email.
My regular office hours will resume right after Labor Day. I hope you all - each and every one of you - have the summer you dream of. - David |
Music Notes from Alfa Radford
YOUTH & CHILDREN'S CHOIRS' FALL MUSICAL: "Miya-sama" and other sounds of "THE MIKADO" are already in the air! Gilbert and Sullivan's marvelous, magnificent musical MIKADO is coming this Fall, with Performances Nov 7-10. It's a hilarious spoof, poking fun at 19th century British court life, in the guise of Japanese costume and character. We'll begin rehearsals on Monday evening, September 9, using the first few sessions to get acquainted with its delightful music. Be sure to register ONLINE for the Choirs! Church website: www.uubelmont.org. After the show, we'll begin rehearsing holiday music, so those who didn't do The Mikado may re-join the Choirs at that time. Watch for a mailing this summer which will contain lots more information about our production! Call me with questions 781.646.2123.
ROSES & VIRTUAL APPLAUSE to all the Choirs, Soloists, and Vocal Ensembles, Youth, Chancel, Jr, Sr, Nova, Linden Singers, and the First Church Gospel Band, for contributing wonderful music to our Sunday Worship services during this past church year. And MORE ROSES to the many parishioners who played and/or sang service music.
GRATEFUL BOUQUETS to JR & CHANCEL CHOIR SHEPHERDS last Sunday: Cliff Backman, Wendy Conroy, Kathleen Kim, Diane Miller, Jennifer Roderick, Kate Searle, and Kelly Sims-Gallagher.
BRIGHT HALOS on other Choir Parents (Angels, named and un-named) who assisted in various ways during the year: Angela Chan, Wendy Conroy, Glynnis Doucette, Erica Faldt-Ciccolo, Gabby Garschina, Carolyn Howard, Robin Hughes, Vickie Livermore, Diane Lopez, Theresa O'Connor, Livia Racz, David Searls, Holly Talanian, and Leslie Wolf.
And now to this Summer: In July, I shall attend a conference sponsored by the Amercian Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Then in mid-August, I'll be on a tour to Prince Edward Island. This is "uncharted" territory for me, and I am looking forward to the adventure! The rest of the summer will be spent relaxing, reading, preparing for the Fall play, and planning our music for the next church year. Happy Summering - with joyful blessings, Alfa |

Children's Religious Education Information
Sunday School Program Notes
This year grades one through six discussed UU Principles, World Religions and two parts of the Life's Journey pillar (relationships and loss). During the 2013-2014 church year they will start out with new UU curriculum on UU history, famous UUs and Dr. Seuss stories. The resolving conflict portion of Life's Journey will come next, followed by an expanded focus on Our Judeo-Christian Heritage.
The CRE Committee has two reasons to move to a two-semester model next year: first, we will amplify our coverage of topics that received short shrift in the former three-term model. Secondly, the longer semester time frame will allow social action projects and Earth-centered Traditions lessons to be interspersed throughout the year, as they occur in the calendar.
Teachers will sign up for either the fall or spring semester. While the overall length of the semester will be longer than the previous terms, our expectation for how many weeks you will be in the classroom has not increased.
Note: there will be no changes to the grade 5 and 6 or grade 8 Our Whole Lives sexuality class schedules.
Register Now for Religious Education Classes Next Year
Thank you to the 104 families who have registered for next year! Please register your children and youth now if you haven't already done so! It helps enormously in planning next year's classes to know who will be returning. The registration process for infants, children, 9th grade Coming of Age students and high school youth group members is combined to minimize duplicate data entry. Please follow this link to fill out the form: http://bit.ly/11XPqKt.
Early Registration Bonus Winners!
On June 1, we drew the names of two lucky families who won four hours of free babysitting - just by registering their children for next year's religious education classes by May 31. The winners are the Klimasmith and Thomas families.
Farewell to Tekla
Tekla Toman has been our year-long lead teacher in the preschool class. She will be moving back to Arizona this summer and will not be returning to FCB in the fall. Tekla has been a calm, competent and compassionate presence among our young children. We will miss her cheerfulness, unflappability and energy. We wish her well both personally and professionally as she moves on to work with a classroom of autistic children next year.

As Unitarian Universalists we can develop and provide strategies for living in a world that can be challenging. As parents we struggle with how we can protect our children from the violence and inappropriate sexuality of our culture. Our call to you is for help in putting together and guiding a discussion on parenting today with progressive values. If you are interested in more information, contact ddobbins@uubelmont.org or landerson@uubelmont.org. |
Remember to Bring Back Water
Our opening service for the fall on September 8 will be a Multigenerational Water Ingathering. We will celebrate the opening of the church year with a ceremony in which we each pour a small amount of water into a common vessel. The water we bring represents some piece of our summer that we are bringing back into the new year. Whether you go on exotic travels or stay home in your own backyard, remember to bring some water on Sunday, September 8 to represent your spiritual journeys during the summer months. (Empty film canisters are just right.) |
To Our Office Volunteers
