What made Whitey Bulger infamous? He has frightened and fascinated us. Boldly he hid in plain sight for many years and then he was captured. Hear Whitey Bulger's story told to us by First Church member Dick Lehr, author with Gerard O'Neill of the new book, Whitey. Refreshments and book signing. For more information click here.

Job Seeker Buddy Group

The Adult Program Job Seeker's Buddy Group plans to have a table at the June 2 coffee hour. The Group hopes to attract new members in job or career transition to develop their job search skills and explore what they would like to do in their next job. Teresa Howe, career counselor, has been facilitating exercises from the latest edition of 'What Color is Your Parachute'. The Group also is open to exploring 'networking connections' with church members. Drop by the table on June 2 to find out more. The Group is conducting a What Color is Your Parachute Workshop on Tuesday, June 4 from 4-6pm in the Library.
Contact Teresa Masterson-Howe, thowe@uubelmont.org to reserve a spot for the workshop.

A Summer Reverie

Rev. David M. Bryce

9:00 & 11:00 Church Service

Childcare for infants and young children

Why do we have "summer?" I don't mean the meteorological season; I mean the time of school break, of camp and of vacations. Some thoughts on the value of rest, of genuine recreation (re-creation) and of restoration.

Rev. David BryceReflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister

A few days ago I spent two and a half hours on the phone with a very nice young gentleman named Mayank who was sitting in Mumbai, India. And speaking with. (I was having a computer problem and he was helping me to solve it.)

There was a moment when (with my permission) he took over my computer; I sat and watched the cursor roam around the screen as he did a variety of tasks.

How astonishing that he, sitting in a place halfway around the globe could take over the computer on my lap. I know, that is old hat, so to speak. That has been happening for years. But I am also a bit "old hat."

I remember being in Kenya in 1970 and receiving word that I should call home. I had to "book" the call through a hotel operator and once I did I was told it would be six hours before the call went through. Those were the days when several operators would be involved in such a call; so after a six hour delay (which was then extended by an hour) the telephone operator in the hotel lobby where I was making the call from put me on the phone with an operator at the phone company in Nairobi. The Nairobi operator said, "Go ahead, Nairobi long distance"; the long distance operator said, "Go ahead, London"; the London operator said, "Go ahead, New York"; and the New York operator said, "Go ahead, Westport (Connecticut)" and the Westport operator said, "You are connected to your call" at which point my mother said "Hello?". Six people between me and the person I was calling.

Today people in Nairobi get on their cell phones and call people in the US. Right away. No operators. No chain of others in between.

And on Monday Mayank took control of my computer. There is something magical about that. Technology has changed a little bit since 1970.

The funny thing is that back in 1970 I thought we were living in modern times. I thought that the technology we had then was so advanced! (But I expected flying cars by 1999--and a permanent settlement on Mars by then, too.)

I believe it was science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke who said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." He was correct. What he failed to say was that technological change can also feel like magic.

How do we adjust to change that is so dramatic? Not just we as individuals, but we as a culture and we as a religious community.

As a congregation we now email our newsletter, we have a Facebook page and a web site; but how do we (again, as a congregation but also as individuals) move into the magical world that is ahead of us while viewing it with wonder and not with fear or hesitation?

I was delighted that Mayank could take over my computer and fix it for me. It is the conjuring up of that delight which is the key.

Calling all Binders!!!

Touching Moment from Children's RE this Spring

After the Youth Group service I was tidying classrooms in the RE wing when a grandmotherly woman came down the hall. She looked to be of Asian descent and perhaps did not speak English well. She peeked into a classroom, saw a large poster of Buddha, and said to me, "Buddha?" "Yes, Buddha," I answered. She continued to the next classroom doorway and saw another big poster of Buddha. "Buddha?" she said. "Buddha!" I answered. We smiled and she went on her way. I was left reflecting on how we all connect at so many levels and on how wonderful it is to offer our children such a rich diversity of religious education programming based on our six sources. May it always be so.

Laurel Whitehouse, Director of Children's Religious Education

Lay Pastoral Care Team

As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community.   - Nancy Davis, Parrish Dobson, Martha Moore, and Martha Spaulding
