Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
April 29, 2013
This weekend I attended both our Youth Group service on Sunday and the annual meeting of the Mass Bay District of the Unitarian Universalist Association on Saturday.
One of the common themes of these two events was community.
Human beings are communal animals. As infants we need others in order to survive. Most of us never outgrow our desire for human connection. Thus we celebrate family and live in villages, towns and cities.
Alone-ness is not the ideal circumstance for people.
Community makes us stronger; and in community we can achieve much more than if we act alone. I have always felt that the first step in creating a community that acts for social justice is the creation of a strong community; only then can we reach out together to transform the world.
Several of our youth spoke eloquently about the sense of community they found within the Youth Group, and of how important it was to them, how much strength and hope it gave to them.
And so it is for many of us in our congregation. The sense of community, the sense of being in connection with others, is a primary reason for our gathering together on Sunday morning. It may not be the only reason, but it is an important reason.
So, too, it is important that we as a congregation recognize that we are in shared community with other Unitarian Universalist congregations. And we are so in several different ways.
We are part of the Mass Bay District and join in its annual meeting; we are part of the Unitarian Universalist Association and have nine delegates to its General Assembly; we join with other UU congregations to support the UU Urban Ministry and its good works; and we have the opportunity to be part of UU Mass Action which represents UU congregations and values in our Commonwealth.
In community with one another, we can make a difference in the world. |
