Success Her Way
How Women in the Financial Service Industry Stand Out 
A recent LIMRA report, "Untapped Potential," focusing on women in the financial services industry, discovers what's wrong and what's right for women in the industry today. Women who succeed as financial services professionals say they have to be great-not good. Among the many factors to their success, three stand out:
- Become skilled at time management. Financial advisors keep long and sometimes unusual hours to get the job done. One advisor noted the benefit of her home office providing time management training. This became a turning point in her success story. "It wasn't until I learned to manage my time that I really came into my own as a professional," she said.
- It pays to be a good listener. Most say building and maintaining relationships will lead to success in the business. The emphasis is on relationships, not selling. Women advisors stress the importance of strengthening their client relationships over time, seeing them through life's milestones. Female advisors also talk about another key strength they have-the ability to support their clients by listening to them in a meaningful way. Female advisors spoke about the importance of building client relationships, but also the trade-offs to taking the time to do that.
- Training and support systems matter. Many advisors agree that if you don't have support systems in place to help foster and cultivate a career, it will be difficult to make it. Support may come in the form of in-person, Web-based, sales desk, or specialized consulting. Women tend to leverage support services more to drive success. Though the financial implications may impact the commitment organizations have to training and support, in the long run, successful results will win out.
