I might have to start a whole series on this subject -- items we find that we simply have a hard time parting with. And by "we," I really mean me -- Christopher Lancette. Won-ok Kim doesn't get so sentimentally attached to our merchandise.
Take a look at this giant, sweet, Scooby-Doo looking dog. He's huge. We rescued him more than a year ago as we were cruising down a country highway en route to Copper Fox Antiques, one of the great shops where we rent space to sell more of treasures. I saw Super Scoob out of the corner of my eye while doing about 60 miles an hour on Lee Highway near Sperryville, Virginia. He was sitting at a yard sale, lonely as could be.
I jammed on the brakes and told a bewildered and unsuspecting Won-ok, "Hey Babe, the last thing we need is a giant five-foot-tall stuffed dog. Let's get it anyway!"
Won-ok is very forgiving in these moments. She's used to them by now. It took us 10 minutes to properly tuck the pooch into our Prius but off we went.
It took me a year to even put him out for sale the first time, which I only did last month. Our company is named after a dog and I am a sucker for anything canine, even a man-made one with great big eyes and a dazzling smile. The moment people made an offer on him at a previous sale, I pulled him back. I just couldn't say goodbye.
Ol' Super Scoob takes up an inordinate amount of space in our garage -- a place we are always desperately trying to clear. It's time for me to let him go, for him to give joy to someone else.
So come out to our Great Falls, Virginia estate sale this weekend and adopt this big furry hunk of happiness. He'll make for a fine companion in your home.
Just don't mind if I cry when I say goodbye.
