Todd Jordan
Greetings:

Safety, guidance, sustenance and peace are all things we would associate with any definition of abundant life. This is universal. Moreover, I cannot think of a society or culture anywhere who lived at any time that didn't want all four of those as a part of their daily life. Of course, identifying them is the easy part. Attaining them-well, that's a different story. People throughout the ages have worked, fought even killed in order to get them. Ironically, we don't have to "get" them. God provides them. Our problem is that we misunderstand what true safety, guidance, sustenance and peace are. Jesus says, "I AM the Good Shepherd." He lays down his life for us-his flock. In doing so we are given the free gift of abundant life right here, right now. So, what does that mean? Join me this Sunday as we explore the powerful claims of Jesus in John 10:1-10.

May Mission Focus

Mission Milby

The Mission Milby Community Development Corporation (MMCDC) aims to "significantly reduce poverty in Houston's

Pecan Park and surrounding East End neighborhoods by revitalizing the community while preserving its heritage and honoring its culture and character." In collaboration with

community stakeholders and other Houston-area partners (such as Strawbridge), MMCDC is working to improve residents' quality of life "so that all may experience God's grace and blessing through established and sustainable measures such as love, trust, acceptance, education, employment, safety, and health." In addition to financial support, SUMC also pursues hands-on opportunities to further MMCDC's mission ministry.

New Directions Class Study "Respectable sins "

Have Christians become so preoccupied with "major" sins that we have lost sight of our need to deal with more subtle sins? Navigator author Jerry Bridges addresses the "acceptable" sins that we tend to tolerate in ourselves, including pride and anger. He goes to the heart of the matter, exploring our feelings of shame and grief and opening a new door to God's forgiveness and grace. Travel down the road of spiritual formation with Jerry and discover your true identity as a loved child of God."   Come join us in Room 207.
