News from Double Ewe
November 11, 2015
I'm sitting here at my computer this morning, trying to figure out how to start this newsletter.  I feel like I need to say something like, "With Christmas coming up soon and Hanukkah coming up even sooner, we're deep in the gift-knitting season."  Or "There's only X days until the holidays!"

But, I really dislike the pressure around the holidays.  The frenzy.  The constant reminders.  So, I'll just say hi.  :)

I've decided that I'm going to try sending out this newsletter a bit more often.  I try to do it once a month, but sometimes I get off track.  Then six weeks or so go by, and then there are SO many things I want to tell you about.  So it gets to be a bigger and bigger task.  So, I'm going to start making them a bit shorter and sending them out more often.  I haven't decided on what day of the week I'm going to send them, or even if it'll be exactly weekly, but I'll get it figured out.   I hope that's okay with you!
Veterans Day

To all our veterans:  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  As a small token of my gratitude, I'd like to offer all veterans 20% off their purchases today.

Knit Alongs
We're starting two knit alongs this week (actually one of them starts this afternoon - talk about great advanced notice!).   Both of these knit alongs are free - we just ask that you purchase your materials from Double Ewe.

Wednesdays, November 11 - 25, 4:00 - 6:00
Christmas Stockings

This is the Christmas stocking I started last year for my youngest granddaughter.  Last year she was too young to know that I didn't finish it for her.  This year...I really need it done.  So, for three Wednesdays, I'm combining Kelly's Workshop with a Christmas Stocking Knit Along. There's plenty of time to knit one (or two, even) before December.  We'll be using my favorite Christmas Sock pattern by Nancy Lindberg.
If you purchase  (or purchased) your materials from Double Ewe, there's no charge for this knit along.  If you'd like to use materials purchased elsewhere, our normal $5 workshop class fee applies.

Mittens!
Thursdays, November 12 and 19th, 4:00 - 6:00
I love knitting mittens.  I'm not sure why...I think it's just comfort knitting for me.  I knit this one with Mammoth, and it fits me perfectly.  We'll be knitting basic chunky mittens, but if you have another pattern in mind, bring it!  This knit along is free, I just ask that you purchase the yarn for your mittens from us.

Upcoming Classes

A Merry Meander
This shallow crescent shaped shawl is worked from one end to the other.  The shawl begins fairly narrow.  The crescent shape is created by increases for the first half, followed by a section without shaping, and then decreases for the second half.  It includes an eyelet border along the top, and a plain section where shaping takes place, a lace insert and a lace edging.  The insert pattern can be a reminder of a pleasant walk along a stream on a beach, or through the forest floor.  The shawl uses just one 400 yard skein of fingering weight yarn.  The sample was made with Sun Valley Fibers.

If I could only knit with yarn made by one company, I think I'd pick Malabrigo.  Yum.  we've added a couple more yarns from Malabrigo to the shop:  Silky Merino and Arroyo.

This infinity scarf took just 3 skeins of Silky Merino.  It's roughly half silk and half merino wool.  It's just luscious.  It was a fun pattern called Something in the Air - not really for beginners, but just interesting enough without hurting my brain.  Don't worry, those aren't bobbles along the edge...they're picots.  (Bobbles, you either love 'em or hate 'em.)

I've put together a little bundle, but if you checck out the projects on Ravelry, there are 16,766 examples of what other folks have done with Silky Merino.  Beautiful stuff!
Pattern:  Something in the Air
Bundle of ideas:  Silky Merino

Tami finished her Dark & Stormy sweater.  Beautiful, eh?  (We tried to use Bert's "chink trick" in the photo, but it got a little silly.  We'll have to work on our photographer/model skills.  :)

Pattern:  Dark & Stormy
Yarn:  Rios from Malabrigo

Em's been at it again!  This time it's a cute slouch hat knit with Encore Dynamo.  Free pattern at the shop!

A few weeks ago, I introduced one of our new yarns for fall:  Inca Tweed.  But it was just a quick post...I didn't do it justice.  Inca Tweed is a lofty, slight thick-and-thin blend of wool and alpaca with a touch of acrylic/rayon.  It knits up quickly for cozy garments and accessories.  I put together a bundle of patterns for it.  Take a peek.  Really.  Good stuff in there:  Inca Tweed Bundle of Ideas

New from Knitter's Pride:  Royale.  Inspired by The City of Love, Paris, they're a part of the Luxury Collection.  Colorful wood needles with glittering brass tips...they're beautiful!  Our first order of these sold out within days, but rest assured, more will arrive very soon!

Check out the flyer we got with our Top This order yesterday.  They're coming out with winter/holiday versions!  So stinkin' cute.  They won't be available until December, but I wanted to give you a heads-up, so you can plan accordingly.

But you don't have to wait until December for the oteher super-cute hats.  Bears, bunnies, flowers, owls, we've got 10 styles in all.  My personal favorite is the giraffe.  we've also got a couple of patterns using the Top This skeins to make super cute slippers and a scarf.  Ravelry has some other options for fun things to make with these cute skeins; I put them in a bundle to make it easy for you:  Top This Idea Bundle

I can check this one off my "wish to knit" list.  It turned out beautiful!  the pattern is Umaro by Jared Flood.  I knitted it with Perfection Super Bulky - it was perfect.  You need to see and touch it in person - I love it!

Hanging Out at Double Ewe

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required, no strings attached, just show up.  We have three times set up for you to join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 5:30
  • Saturdays, starting at 9:00am

We gather three times each week, however if you find yourself with some time to kill, or just want a little escape, stop on by anytime we're open and find a spot around the coffee table; enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and relax a while.

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice classes.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.

Finally, I wanted to share photos of my grandkids in their Christmas knits.  Yup, they were supposed to be Christmas presents, but I couldn't wait to give them.  I'm like that.  :)  The girls got ponchos, and I knit Dominic a serape.

Buh Bye!
