News from Double Ewe
September 2, 2015
Happy fall!  OK, I looked it up, and I know the first "official" day of fall isn't until September 23rd, but in my mind, September 1st is that first, magical day.  The weather doesn't agree this week, but rest assured, it will soon.  I love fall.  Just saying.  :)

Labor day is this weekend, but since we're closed on Mondays, it's not really going to impact us here at the shop.  Except in one way:  Next week, starting Tuesday, August 5th, we're switching back to our regular hours.  So, our hours will be:
Tuesday 10 - 9pm
Wednesday - Friday 10 - 6pm
Saturday 9 - 5pm
Sunday-Monday Closed

There's lots of info in this newsletter:  a Knit Along, another new teacher at Double Ewe, Fall Classes, as well as some new projects & yarns we've featured on Facebook this month.  Read on!
Scoreboard Knit Along
Some folks from the Friendly Flock got us going on this fun knit along from  Knit Purl Hunter and Skacel.  What's the Scoreboard KAL?  In a nutshell, you'll be knitting along with your team as they score, or as their opponents score - you'll be capturing your favorite team's season in the form of a hand-knit Scoreboard cowl!  It sounds really fun, even to a non-football-watching gal like myself.

All the details can be found here:  Scoreboard KAL.  We've registered our team on their website, we're The Football Flock, now we're just waiting for the season to start.  Check it out, and join in the fun!
Welcome Nancy McElmurry
We're thrilled to have Nancy teaching at Double Ewe this fall!  Nancy learned to knit at age 6 and made her first sweater at age 9.  After knitting casually for several years, in 1985 she decided to concentrate on knitting, over other crafts, and to get good at it.  Her entries in the State Fair have received several blue ribbons.  Nancy started teaching knitting classes in 2001.  She enjoys using various techniques and looks forward to sharing her expertise and love of knitting with you.
Classes
We've got some fun things coming up this fall.  For the details, please see the schedule here on our website, or stop by the shop for a copy.  Here's what we've got set up for September, but check out October & November on the link above.

New:  Classes marked with an asterisk (*) are great "next step" classes for less experienced knitters & crocheters.  You need to know the basic stitches, but we'll take it from there!

Knitting with Nancy Lindberg This popular class starts up again on September 17.  Nancy's patterns have been sold in yarn shops throughout the country for  many years, and we're fortunate to have her teach a weekly class at Double Ewe!

Bosc Pear A lovely asymmetrical triangle shawl knit on the bias from one end beginning with just a few stitches.  This shawl features stockinette & lacy sections all with a fun little border.  Specially designed for color changing yarns, but any fingering weight yarn would make a lovely shawl.

*Wrapped in the Seasons Quick & rewarding to knit, this uses two hanks of Malabrigo Mecha (or any chunky yarn), and is perfect for many seasons. Simply toss it over your shoulders as a wrap or wear it as a scarf.

Two At a Time Toe-Up Socks Tami's ever popular class is back!  End Second Sock Syndrome Now!

*Tunisian Crochet:  What the Heck - Home Dec! Why not add some delightful color to your table and crochet this easy-care place mat & coaster set?  This set alternates stripes of solid and variegated Plymouth Fantasy Naturale yarn, crocheted with Tunisian Crochet Simple Stitch.  join the fun and add this technique to your crochet "toolbox".

*Fibers & Weights & Ply, Oh My! What's a ply?  What about skeins, hanks, cakes, balls...?  And why so many choices of fibers?  Wool, alpaca, cotton, mohair, acrylic, so many options!  Which is best for what?  In this class, Tami is going to share her vast knowledge about all things yarn.  Maybe we should have called it "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Yarn But Were Afraid to Ask".

Comodo:  A Sweater
Here's an A-line sweater (flattering on many figure types) that allows for Maximum Freedom with Your Yarn at Your Gauge for your size.  No gauge swatch is necessary, one piece from the neck down, this is a fun and engaging knit.  Too good to be true?  You might just have to give this class a try!

*Mecha Moebius Crocheting a chunky cowl doesn't get any faster than this!  Simply worked with gorgeous Malabrigo Mecha yarn (or any chunky yarn) and a large hook, the moebius zips through your fingers.  Experience the magic of crocheting the Moebius shape, which has a 180-degree twist, created at  the very start of the project.  It is a one-sided, one-edge object.

What's New & This Month on Facebook

While I try not to clutter your inbox and send this  newsletter just once a month, I do post things to the Double Ewe Facebook page quite often (link at the top left column of this email).  I understand that many of you prefer not to use Facebook, so I'll share some highlights from the last month.

I enjoyed this project a lot, and I was a little sad when it came to an end.  This happens to me a lot when I crochet...maybe because the end comes a little faster than when I knit  I don't know.  But it was fun.  :)

I've got a new family of yarns to introduce you to:  Arequipa Worsted, Fur and Boucle.  Now, I'm not usually one for furs or boucles, but these are really lovely.  Three distinctly different yarns in four natural colors, and they're made of natural fibers (mostly merino, alpaca or silk) - even the fur!  They coordinate really well to make things like the elegant cowl above, yet they stand on their own as well.
Here's a Ravelry bundle for some more ideas:  Arequipa Bundle

What a fun project this - every stitch was a treat; it's another one of those projects that you're a little sad to see come to a end.  It's the Two Harbors Poncho, which is sort of a classy take on a traditional poncho.  It's knit with Extra from Blue Sky alpacas - a decadent blend of merino and alpaca in big, plump, yummy skeins.  We've got nine colors available, with more on the way.  (I didn't include the cream and white in the photo - they just don't play nice with the camera.)

I finished my Rainchaser hat yesterday - what  FUN knit!  It looks so  much more complicated than it is.  Using the basic mosaic (slip stitch) technique, you never carry more than one color per round, but it makes such a cool pattern.

And the yarn:  All American Sport from Swans Island.  Yum.  100% Rambouillet wool.  And they really mean "all American", all the way from the sheep to the scouring, spinning and dying.  Lovely stuff!  You really have to touch my hat.

Here's the pattern for the hat I made:

But if that's not your cup of tea, I made a bundle of lots of other projects that work well for All American Sport:  All American Sport Ravelry Bundle

Hanging Out at Double Ewe

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required, no strings attached, just show up.  We have three times set up for you to join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 5:30
  • Saturdays, starting at 9:00am

We gather three times each week, however if you find yourself with some time to kill, or just want a little escape, stop on by anytime we're open and find a spot around the coffee table; enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and relax a while.

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice classes.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.
