Let's Stay in Touch

Clearly I've been dropping the ball as far as this newsletter, and our little monthly chat feels more like quarterly lately.

Bummer.  I really need to get back into my routine.

However, if my so-called "monthly" newsletter doesn't feel like enough, or if it gets lost in the typical in-box clutter, there's another way to stay in touch with us:  Facebook.  I've been pretty consistent posting when new yarns arrive, when we've got trunk shows, and what the folks at Double Ewe are working on.  Facebook gets a bad rap sometimes, but really, it's a nice way to keep in touch.  Check us out here:  Double Ewe Yarn Shop
New Stuff
Since I last wrote, we've probably added 20 new yarns or so...it would bore you to tears if I listed them all!  So today, I'll just talk about the latest, spring-ish yarns that arrived last week.

Tahiti from Schachenmayr
A beautiful gradient yarn in a light fingering weight cotton.  What does "gradient" mean?  It means it gradually shifts from color to color...beautiful for summer shawls & shawls.  Each cute little ball has a whopping 306 yards - lots of bang for your buck!  There are many of gorgeous projects using Tahiti on Ravelry, it might take some time to decide which one to do.

----------

Merino Extrafine Cotton 120 from Schachenmayr
This is the latest addition to the Merino Extrafine family, and it's just in time for the temps to rise a bit.  It's a 50/50 blend of merino wool & cotton.  It's machine washable and DK weight, making it a nice choice for that special grandchild, or maybe a spring slouchy hat.  Lots of possibilities.  What does the 120 mean?  There are 120 meters in each ball...that's 131 yards here in the US.

----------

Cotton Summer Smile Color from Regia
This is the first of three new sock yarns coming for spring from Regia.  It's a self-patterning blend of wool and cotton, with some polyamid thrown in for strength.  Really nice stuff for warm-weather handknit socks.
Save the Date(s)
Two events are coming in the next couple months I wanted to give you the heads-up about.

Pi Day - March 14th
The mathematical sign or symbol for Pi on a blackboard

Do you know about Pi Day?  Remember math?  Remember Pi?  3.14159265359?   Well, Pi Day is March 14th - the 3.14 part of the number.  Well, this year is a very Pi Day:  3/14/15 - the first five digits instead just three.  Anyway, we've decided to embrace this Very Special Pi Day here at Double Ewe.  We haven't worked out all the details, but I wanted you to mark it on your calendars.  I'll fill you in on the scoop in a couple of weeks.  It'll be fun.

Minnesota Yarn Shop Hop - April 9 - 11

The Shop Hop is a spring tradition here in the Twin Cities, and this year Double Ewe will be joining in on the fun!  17 shops are participating - visit the blog to learn a bit about them all.  I'll fill you in on the details as the date gets closer, or you can visit www.minnesotayarnshophop.com for more info.

UPCOMING CLASSES & KAL'S

I'm currently working on the  schedule for our next round of classes, but it's not quite ready yet.  However, I'd like to highlight a couple of classes coming up soon that we've still got openings for:

Knit Along:  Cushy Cable Reversible Loop or Scarf

Take reversible cables to the next level:  knit them with a brioche rib in two colors.  We suggest Kenzie or Simplinatural, but there are lots of choices.  You can make this as a scarf or a buttoned cowl.

Skill level:  Experienced

When:  Thursday afternoons 4:00 - 6:00

Dates March 5 - 12 (2 weeks)

Cost:  $5 per week

Materials:  100 grams each of two colors of yarn from DK to light chunky; needles appropriate for the yarn selected.

Knit Along:  Autumn in Garrison Hat

Join us in knitting this cute chapeau.  It's knit from the top down, starting on DPN's then moving to a 16" circular for the end.  The pattern is charted, so you'll have the opportunity to work on your chart reading skills.  If you haven't knitted from a chart, don't worry, we'll help you along and you'll become an expert by the end of the hat.  Just one skein of the luxurious Canopy Worsted is all it takes.

Skill level:  Intermediate or ambitious advanced beginner

When:  Thursday afternoons, 4:00 - 6:00

Dates:  March 26 - April 2 (2 weeks)

Cost:  $5.00 per week

Materials:  One skein of Canopy worsted, or 200 yards worssted weight yarn.  16" circular needles sizes 5 & 7, DPN's size 7

Two at a Time Toe Up Socks

Back by popular demand! These sessions fill up quickly, so we're offering it again, but after this session we're planning on taking a break, so if you're interested, sign up now.  You'll learn to knit two socks at the same time on one long circular needle using the Magic Loop method.

When:  Saturday afternoons, 2:00 - 4:00

Cost:  $30 plus materials

Materials:  100 grams of sock yarn.  One pair of 32" or longer circulars in the size of your choice (Size 1 through 2 recommended for sock yarn).

Skills needed:  Basic knitting skills including increasing, decreasing.  You'll be knitting using fairly fine yarn and small needles, but if you prefer to learn using a heavier weight yarn such as worsted and larger needles, that's an option as well.  Experience in knitting socks one at a time is recommended.

Dates:  March 21, 28 and April 18 (There will be no class on April 4 due to Easter, and no class on April 11 due to the Yarn Shop Hop.)

Charity Knitting Opportunities
Are you interested in doing some charity knitting? The Crafty Lunch Bunch supports six different charities with hand knit or crocheted items going to homeless youth, seniors, elementary kids, veterans, animals, cancer patients...lots of choices and something for everybody. Want more details?  Check out their brochure, and join their Ravelry Group to see what's been done so far.

Each project has specific instructions, so please be sure to read the brochure carefully before casting on.
Recently on Facebook
While I try not to clutter your inbox and send this newsletter just once a month, I do post things to the Double Ewe Facebook page quite often (link at the top left column of this email).  I understand that many of you prefer not do use Facebook, so I'll share a few of the posts from the last month.

Yesterday I went on strike with my paperwork, and spent a good part of the day with the folks that came and went around the coffee table in the shop.  And I started a fresh project; it was so fun, I had to try it with another yarn.  Great yarns, great pattern, and great friends.  It was the perfect Saturday.  :)

Remember the fingerless gloves I made last Saturday?  Well, it seems like I got a bit obsessed, and I just had to try them in six different yarns.  I have a couple more I'd like to try, but I'm trying to hold back.
Pattern:  Welted Fingerless Gloves by Churchmouse
Yarns from left to right:  Alpaca Handknitting DK from Kraemer, Ewetopis from Frog Tree, Llambrosia from Frog Tree, Merino Extrafine 120 from Schachenmyar, Kenzie from Hikoo, KnitCol from Plymouth.

Have you wondered what this yarn knits up like?  Here it is.  This sweet little sweater takes just 3 patterns, and the pattern is a freebie on Ravelry:  F595 Baby Cardigan.

Warning:  another cute-baby-in-handknits photo, but this time there's some crochet too.  Emma headed to her 9 month physical in this bright & happy outfit.

HatSummer Beanie with Brim & Flower, crocheted by Grandma Kelly (me).  Yarn:  Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton.
Sweater:  Sideways Sockyarn Baby Sweater, knitted by Great Grandma Mary.  Yarn:  Neon Now from Plymouth Yarns.  Unfortunately, it seems the pattern is no longer available.  I did a searched and found something similar though.  It's a freebie, but I've never knit it, so I can't vouch for it's accuracy - just a suggestion.

Tami's latest:  A super cushy, garter stitch, wool rug.   It feels so good on your tootsies!  The pattern's a freebie.  Yarn:  Country Roving from Kraemer Yarns.

Hanging Out at Double Ewe

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required, no strings attached, just show up.  We have three times set up for you to join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00
  • Fridays, all day
  • Saturdays, starting at 9:00am

We gather three times each week, however if you find yourself with some time to kill, or just want a little escape, stop on by anytime we're open and find a spot around the coffee table; enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and relax a while.

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice classes.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.

Kelly
