Space Camp

A Word from Dr. Collins

Dear SGES Families,

The Lower and Middle School students enjoyed their wonderful overnight field trips this week.  The weather was great and the students experienced a wide range of opportunities.  Here is a list of the trips

-        3rd Grade - 4-H Center at Rock Eagle
-       4th and 5th Grades - Space Camp at Huntsville
-       6thGrade - Cumberland Island
-       7thGrade - Leadership seminar at Epworth by the                                 Sea
-       8thGrade - Washington, D.C.

These are usually the most favorable memories of the school year for the students.

Each year we are fortunate to have an outstanding faculty and staff.  As we are planning for next year I wanted to give you an update on a few positions:

-  Valerie Moore has agreed to teach 9th grade English for us next year.  Mrs. Moore has over ten years of teaching experience in private schools and has English degrees from Auburn University.  She has most recently taught at Flint River Academy and lives in Thomaston.

-          Laura King has agreed to lead our one act play competition for high school students in the fall.  Mrs. King formerly taught at St. George's and currently teaches at Gordon State College and is a published playwright.

-          Cindy Plageman has been part of St. George's for a number of years.  However, for next year in addition to working with students one-on-one she has agreed to coordinate the student support areas of the Learning Enrichment Center (LEC).  Mrs. Plageman will work with teachers, parents, and students to develop a plan that enhances student academic success.  This will allow Erin Mulder, LEC Coordinator, to grow the other areas of the LEC in our strategic plan.  These primarily are parent, community, and non-academic student programs.  These have already been initiated through Lunch and Learn, Community Leaders' Luncheon, Parent Discussion Groups, and Student Seminars.

-          With all of the good news, I am afraid there is one piece of unfortunate news.  Mr. John Lobello has recently accepted a position at a school in Macon.  Mr. Lobello has done a great job preparing our students for high school Spanish.  He will also be greatly missed for the extras he does around campus such as playing the piano for chapel, editing the yearbook, and leading elective courses.  I trust you will express to him your sincere appreciation for his time at St. George's.

We have over 130 people registered for the "Color for a Cure" run this Friday, May 1

st.  The 4th and 5th grade students are hosting this run to raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetics Research Development.  The run will be held at the cross country trails on campus.  If you have not registered you may still participate in the run; just bring your own white t-shirt.  The fun begins around 2:15 pm.

Founders Day is a week from Sunday, May 3

rd at 1:00 pm.  This year we will be entertained by the Early Childhood students and hear from a few current St. George's students.   The school will provide the meat, tea, and dessert, and we has each family to bring a side dish.  We hope you can attend.  Please RSVP to Susan Bartholomew (sbartholomew@sges.org).

The Athletic Banquet is Monday, May 4

th at 6:00 pm at the school's "grove."  Please RSVP through Form Stack by Thursday, April 30th at 4:00 pm.

Enjoy the weekend,

Larry Collins
