6th Grade
Mayor for a day meeting

A Word From Dr. Collins

Dear St. George's Family,

Congratulations to Sera Elizabeth Davidson and Chaz Martinez for placing in the top 10 in the region Spelling Bee.  This advances both students to the state 2nd round.  This is the highest finish in the school's history.  We are very proud of these two students and all of our students' accomplishments.

We are hosting a rising 9th grade parent and student meeting this Thursday, February 12th at 8:00 am.  We will discuss classes, retreat, class trip, service opportunities, and leadership program.   The meeting should last about 45 minutes and is open to all current 8th grade families as well as prospective families.

In planning for next year's high school, we have reached an agreement with Dr. Franklin Williamson to teach 9th grade World History and introductory Latin next year.  Dr. Williamson received his Bachelor's and Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill.  He currently teaches classes at Gordon State College and is a "grader" for the AP European History exam.   Also, we have secured Marcus Taylor to teach 9th grade Algebra I.  Mr. Taylor taught math for us in the past and is currently teaching part-time at Southern Crescent.  In addition, he is an associate pastor in Jackson.  Mr. Taylor will also assist in service and leadership activities.  Mr. O'Steen will teach 9th grade Geometry.  We will continue to finalize next year's staff and will make you aware as soon as those plans are complete.

Next Friday will be a busy day on campus.  After Celebration Chapel, the Parents' Association will have a brief meeting in the Chapel.  We will have our next House Competition Friday afternoon.  Students should wear their House T-shirts and jeans.  We will end the day with class Valentine's Parties beginning around 2:15 pm.

The following week we will be on Winter Break on Monday, February 16th and Tuesday, February 17th.  Ash Wednesday Eucharist is Wednesday, February 18th and students in grades 3-8 should wear Dress Uniforms.  Also, Wednesday, February 18th is parent-teacher conferences after lunch.  The students will have musical practice during the afternoon.

Last night, 8th grader Molly Watson, presented a grant request on behalf of the school to Lamar Gives 365 (part of Barnesville-Lamar County Community Foundation).  The project is an outdoor classroom on the Sports and Nature Trails.  Molly did a great job with her appeal and due to that we received funding from the group.  In addition, several individuals in the crowd have made personal donations for the project.  I am grateful for Molly's willingness to lead in this effort.

Please remember new family enrollment for next school year begins on Monday, February 16th.  Friday, February 13th is the current family priority deadline (when only current family may re-enroll).

Have a good weekend,

Larry Collins
