Volunteer Spotlight

Melanie Terrell-Redd / Chipato Valley SU / Leader #6097, SU Treasurer / 9years

What is the most surprising thing you have learned/done so far? How much fun you can have with the girls and it doesn't require a lot of money. Also, I teach the girls, but they also teach me too!

If you could relive one moment as a volunteer, what would it be? We put on a Camp Fear Factor a year or so ago.  The girls were awesome and the moms stepped up tremendously.  We had so much fun.

What might people be surprised to know about you? That I actually get really nervous when I get ready to speak in front of a crowd.

What do you wish others knew about volunteering with GS Diamonds? I wish everyone knew how rewarding it can be. The girls really need our guidance and they       really appreciate you for being there.  Also, don't be afraid to ask questions!!!  There is help available to help you.  Don't let this be a   downfall for your troop.

How have you developed as a leader?

I've learned how to be more patient and I learned a lot from the troop's previous leader.

Christine Pilley/ Troop Leader Brownies / First year

  1.
What is the most surprising thing you have learned/done so far?

I never would have believed how much I would look forward to seeing my girls every week. Finding new things to teach them and watch them grow has surprised me more than anything.

  1. What do you wish others knew about volunteering with GS Diamonds?
    1. I wish they knew how rewarding it is to watch the girls' development. Some go from being quiet and just watching to being the first to volunteer. Also, the more you can get your parents involved the better and keep everyone updated and informed. The best thing I have done is choosing the right co-leader and making sure she joins me at the unit meetings, the more she knows the more she can help out.

How have you developed as a leader?

I went from not knowing anything about girl scouts, except that I wanted my daughter to join. Now, I wonder what I would do without my girls! I have learned so much from the other leaders and I stay informed by going to the unit meetings. If I still have questions, I can also send a text or email to another leader or the council staff, they are always willing to help and provide support.
