WCJC cowboys compete in Wyoming
Three out of five members of the WCJC Men's Rodeo Team finished in the top 12 in the nation at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), held earlier this month in Wyoming. Ty Arnold of Midway, Mason Boettcher of East Bernard and Kaine Warnken of Schulenburg all made it to the finals in team roping during the rodeo, held June 12 to June 18 in Casper, Wyo. "Making it to the finals means you are one of the top 12 competitors in the nation," said WCJC Rodeo Coach Sean Amestoy. "I'm proud of what they did. They had a great year." WCJC's team competed against more than 400 competitors from 100 colleges across the nation during the event.

Wisch has 'crucial role' at Crisis Center

Working with abused children requires a delicate balance of compassion and objectivity - qualities that WCJC graduate Brittany Wisch has developed over the course of her life. "Whether it's fostering abandoned animals or helping kids, I feel like I've always been drawn toward advocating for others," said Wish, a West Columbia native. "It's always been my hope that I can help out in some small way." As a forensic interviewer for The Crisis Center - which provides services for abused women and children in Wharton and Matagorda counties - Wisch spends her days talking with children who have oftentimes endured unspeakable acts of violence or abuse.

Discount offered on more than 13 hours

Beginning this fall, WCJC students taking more than 13 hours of academic transfer courses will get a discount on tuition and fees. According to the new policy, students will not be charged tuition or fees for any courses above 13 credit hours provided the students are enrolled in an academic program and not a vocational one. For example, an in-district student taking 19 credit hours will pay around $1,214 - the same amount a student taking only 13 hours will pay.

Block scheduling added for fall semester

WCJC will begin offering block scheduling this fall to increase the predictability of students' course schedules and facilitate timely degree completion in allied health, nursing and career and technology associate degree and certificate programs. The move comes in response to Texas House Bill 1583. "Block scheduling at WCJC means students will have the opportunity to register for courses specific to their selected vocational program, grouped by semester and offered at predictive times," said WCJC President Betty McCrohan.

Fees waived for dual credit students

WCJC will soon offer a financial incentive for out-of-district dual credit students. For the Fall 2016 semester, WCJC will waive the out-of-district fee for dual credit students. That translates to a significant cost savings when considering that out-of-district dual credit students will now pay only about $334 per three credit hour course instead of the usual $487. "The Board of Trustees approved this waiver as a means of providing more students with educational opportunities," said WCJC President Betty McCrohan.
