Volleyball team has outstanding season
The WCJC Pioneers volleyball team capped a stellar season with seven players earning regional honors and Coach Brianna Florus being selected Coach of the Year. The Pioneers play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV, which comprises 11 junior colleges in south Texas. This season, the Pioneers finished 26-9 overall with a conference record of 8-2, tying for first place. The Pioneers competed in the Region XIV Tournament on Nov. 6-8, losing games to Panola College and Tyler Junior College while beating Paris Junior College. Coach Brianna Florus, in her ninth season at WCJC, said she was pleased overall with her team's performance.

'GPS' aims to increase completion rates
From block scheduling to articulation agreements with major universities to technology-based advising, WCJC officials are investigating new methods of ensuring students stay in school and achieve their educational goals. Through the Houston Guided Pathways of Success (GPS), WCJC is collaborating with other colleges in an effort to improve college completion rates and combat the time and money that many students waste trying to navigate their way through the system.

WCJC graduates contribute tax dollars Roughly 98 percent of WCJC graduates remain in Texas, contributing millions in tax revenues and reducing the need for government assistance, according to a recently released report conducted by Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI). The study analyzed data from fiscal year 2012-13. The EMSI study says that, on average, associate degree completers in the six counties included in the WCJC Service Area will earn $39,200 at the midpoint of their careers, $10,200 more than someone with a high school diploma. As these alumni earn more, they pay more in taxes.

Marketing Department receives awards
From digital marketing campaigns to brochures to feature stories, the WCJC Office of Marketing and Communications has received national acclaim for the quality of its work. Since 2001, the department has garnered 28 awards for excellence from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), the Hermes Creative Awards, the MarCom Awards and the AVA Digital Awards. All three organizations recognize work in a range of marketing and communications areas including print, audio, film and new media.

HLS&R provides $50,000 in scholarships
Ten WCJC students are receiving assistance with their schooling thanks to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The HLS&R's Education Programs division recently awarded WCJC with $50,000 to be used for student scholarships. The funds are earmarked for students entering technical fields of study such as process technology, welding and engineering design. Dr. Amy Brandt, WCJC's Dean of Vocational Instruction, said the rodeo wanted to provide funding for students entering technical programs that would be of potential value to the Houston job market.

Surgical Tech students excel on CST test
WCJC recently received a merit award from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) for academic achievement. Between Aug. 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015, WCJC students achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination. The exam tests graduates on basic competencies for safe patient care in the operating room and is widely recognized by the healthcare community as the foremost credential for surgical technologists in the nation.
Many local, state and national healthcare organizations require a passing rate on the CST as a prerequisite for employment.

Donation benefits Senior Citizen program
WCJC's Senior Citizen Program recently received a $5,000 donation from the Wharton County Health Fair. The health fair is held each year, alternating between Wharton and El Campo. This past year's event was held in September at the El Campo Civic Center and included 70 booths focused on health-related issues and services. Fair officials said proceeds from prior events have been donated to area emergency services districts. The fair began in 2006. On hand for the recent check presentation were representatives from area assisted living centers, hospitals, chambers of commerce, home healthcare agencies and the WCJC Senior Citizens Program.

WCJC ranked first by BestColleges.com
BestColleges.com recently released rankings for Texas community colleges. The organization published a list of the top 25 community colleges in Texas on its website - www.BestColleges.com - and WCJC was listed as No. 1. WCJC President Betty McCrohan is pleased with the recognition. "WCJC is doing an admirable job of helping Texas residents continue their education and attain their future goals," McCrohan said. "I credit the college's faculty, staff and administration with putting in the time and effort needed to help students achieve their objectives."

Presidential Scholars
WCJC's 2015-2016 Presidential Scholars were introduced to the public recently in a ceremony attended by elected officials, college trustees and program benefactors. During the event, the group's 13 members were encouraged to use the opportunities provided by the Presidential Scholars program as a launch pad for their careers and educational achievement.
