McCrohan and studentWelcome from President Betty McCrohan
Wharton County Junior College is a treasure trove of educational opportunities for students of all walks of life. With four campuses and dozens of programs to choose from, students can further their education by taking the basic courses needed to transfer to a four-year university or obtain an associate's degree in a desired field or earn a certificate that will help them in a new career. We welcome students in the Gulf Coast region of Texas as well as those from out of state. This e-Newsletter - published quarterly by our Marketing and Communications Department - will provide you with a sample of all that the college has to offer. Please visit our website - www.wcjc.edu - or call 979-532-4560 for more information.

UHSL a one-stop shop for education

At the University of Houston Sugar Land (UHSL) branch campus, students can take the basics, obtain an associate's degree and then transfer to a university - all at the same place. Thanks to a partnership between the University of Houston and WCJC, the campus is a virtual one-stop shop for most students' educational needs. WCJC provides freshman and sophomore level courses while upper-level courses are offered by UH, UH-Victoria and UH-Clear Lake.

Nuclear program attracts global interest
From presentations at nuclear conferences to visits with European researchers, WCJC's Nuclear Power Technology program is attracting worldwide attention. Rudolph Henry, WCJC's director of Nuclear Power Technology, said the program has generated such interest due to the increasing need for a skilled workforce that can manage and operate a nuclear power plant. "As more nuclear power plants are being planned for construction in different parts of the world, emphasis is being placed on nuclear power plant worker training in the various disciplines required to operate such plants," Henry said.

Tuition waived for dual credit students

Thanks to a dual credit program offered by WCJC, area high school students have been able to obtain college credit before they graduate. This current school year, they've been able to do that once again - and at a reduced cost. WCJC's Board of Trustees earlier this summer approved waiving tuition for all in-district dual credit students, which includes those attending high schools in Wharton County and Needville ISD. With in-district tuition costing $32 per semester hour, that translates to a $96 reduction per typical three-hour course.

Renovation projects improve campus
From sewer lines to foundation repair, WCJC's main campus has undergone a significant makeover this year. Mike Feyen, WCJC's director of facilities management, said the work is part of the 2006 master building improvement plan that has outlined $13.3 million in projects for the Wharton campus' 15 primary structures. "All major projects scheduled or completed are based on the 2006 Master Plan," Feyen said. "We regularly review and update that plan to show all progress to date. Parts of that plan include any new construction based on student enrollment needs."

Pioneers inspired by 'Skeeters' game
WCJC baseball players got a taste of what their future might hold while attending a recent Sugar Land Skeeters baseball game. More than 20 sophomore members of the Pioneers Baseball Team were on hand for the minor league club's game on Sept. 16 against the York Revolution at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. Although the Skeeters ended the night on the short end of a 6-2 score, the experience was still thrilling for the WCJC players.

When it comes to providing opportunities for his students, WCJC instructor David Kucera believes in going the extra mile. An instructor of electronics with 17 years of experience under his belt, Kucera makes it his personal mission to help his students find a rewarding career after they leave his classroom. "We as faculty are open to review students' resumes and help assist them in any way we can," Kucera said. "We keep in contact with area industries and a lot of these companies want to hire WCJC graduates. They tell me that they know they can put our graduates to work."
