SCAN was honored to present and congratulate Girl Scout Troop #3533 with the prestigious bronze award after a yearlong service learning project with SCAN at the epicenter.

This group of smart, energetic and compassionate girls chose SCAN as their Bronze Award Project and created "I-Spy" sensory bottles for our Families are Magic prevention program.

They also held a snack drive and stuffed animal drive at their elementary school to stock the shelves for our Family Support Program parenting classes, and organized an incredible mural at SCAN's Henrico Child Advocacy Center (CAC) Satellite.

Led by Alexis Rawlings and Elizabeth Ream, these girls explored their community, made a plan, put their plan in motion and spread the word about child abuse and neglect in their community.

We are grateful for their meaningful work to bring awareness to our mission and for their partnership in our efforts. Thank you Troop #3533 for being advocates in your own community.

Kids helping kids, it doesn't get much better than that!

I Am RVA has chosen Greater Richmond SCAN as one of 4 area non-profits they will support over the next year.

We are excited to partner with this great organization. Please help us support their mission!

Our mission is to foster enthusiasm for bicycling in Richmond by encouraging a sense of community, promoting safety among riders and drivers, and creating pride in the city.
We aim to build solidarity and inclusion through a distinctive bike helmet. Our helmet is unique to Richmond, serving as a visually compelling symbol of unity and pride in our city.

Family Support Program Building Stronger Families

SCAN's Family Support Program provides weekly treatment groups and psycho-educational groups for families that have experienced or are at high risk of experiencing child abuse and/or neglect.

This year, the Family Support Program started a pilot group that met twice a week, instead of the standard one a week meeting, with a fantastic outcome.

We would like to share some inspiring numbers and feedback from parents who recently completed this class.
  • The twice a week group started with 14 clients and 11 graduated. (79%!)
  • 91% of parents showed improvement in at least 3 out of the 5 measured areas on the Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI). AAPI is a validated and reliable inventory used to assess parenting attitudes
  • 91% of parents indicated they were less likely to use physical discipline.
  • "I came into this class expecting the worse, but had the best experience. Natalie was a great instructor."
  • Coping strategies to use: "Exercise, take a walk, remove myself from the situation."
  • Ways to nurture: "Praise them when they are right." "Talk to them and be a better listener."
  • Goals: "Change the way I was thinking, and break the cycle."
We are so thankful for our amazing instructors, and the work they are doing with parents and children in our community.

Is your church planning a Vacation Bible School Week this summer?

Let SCAN be your charity of choice! We're looking to partner with local congregations to help stock the shelves of our snack pantries which serve our Family Support Program and Child Advocacy Centers (there are 2 now!).

Here's how it works: during your week of VBS your children will collect an offering of individually wrapped snack items to donate to SCAN. At the end of the week a SCAN representative will gladly come to your VBS closing ceremony to accept your generous gift and to give a word of thanks.

Interested? Please share this message with your Children's Ministry Director or email Melissa Brooks, Volunteer Coordinator directly at volunteer@grscan.com. We even have a handy flyer you can use to spread the word!
