Board of Directors Member
Ellie Caplice
As a Dinner Host for the
Progressive Dinner & Auction for multiple years, Ellie Caplice had become familiar with SCAN and its mission.
This year she joins SCAN as a member of the Board of Directors, and Vice-Chair for the 2016 Progressive Dinner & Auction. In the role of Vice-Chair, Ellie will help the committee organize and plan the event with a goal of raising $170,000 for SCAN's programs.
"I have been a dinner host for Progressive Dinner for a few years, and it has always been such a fun and easy way to help SCAN. I am excited to see the other side of the Progressive Dinner and help with the planning of the event," Ellie said.
The 14th Annual Progressive Dinner and Auction will be held on Saturday April 30, 2016. Following cocktails, hors d'oeuvre's and a live auction at a private home, guests will dine at one of the more than 20 dinner homes in Windsor Farms, Westmoreland Place, and the near West End, and later "progress" to the Tuckahoe Woman's Club for dessert, followed by a spirited silent auction and dancing.

Speak Up For A Child with Richmond CASA
Each year, CASA volunteers contribute over 5,000 hours of in-kind service. Since Richmond CASA's establishment in 1990, they have served over 10,000 children.
Richmond CASA recruits, trains, and supervises competent and dedicated volunteers who advocate for the needs of abused, neglected, and at-risk children in juvenile dependency proceedings. CASA volunteers gather valuable information to assist the Judge in making decisions about the child's placement and permanency. By advocating for children in court cases, CASA volunteers help to reduce the time a child spends in the court system and/or in foster care while promoting safe, permanent homes for all children.
"Volunteering as a CASA has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Being a part of the effort to give embattled children in our region the opportunity to have a better life, and to help them find homes that can provide the security and support they need, is as worthwhile a mission as I know," said CASA Volunteer Chris Sill.
Currently, Richmond CASA has 206 open cases with 70 active volunteers, along with 105 children on the waiting list and counting.

Volunteers at the Heart of SCAN

The job of SCAN's Volunteer Coordinator is to link our volunteer's passions with our organizational mission.
"People come to us with a unique set of skills and talents and I want them to find a place here at SCAN where they can use those skills and talents to help prevent and treat child abuse and neglect," said Melissa Brooks.
Volunteers are at the heart of SCAN's daily operations. SCAN's volunteers average between 700-1,000 hours of volunteer time per month.
Melissa joined SCAN in June as the Volunteer Coordinator with the goal to continue to leverage volunteer's gift of time and talents to effectively address the needs of the children and families SCAN serves.
"Volunteers not only help us carry out the day to day functions of SCAN, but also help us run efficiently and increase our adaptability; making our work better resourced with a rich underlying culture of kids first," said Melissa.

Become a Steward of Children
Stewards of Children is an internationally recognized revolutionary training that educates adults about how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. This program was created by Darkness to Light (www.d2l.org).
Stewards of Children is ideal for parents, staff and volunteers in youth-serving organizations and concerned community members. SCAN believes it's the responsibility of adults to prevent child sexual abuse. Stewards of Children gives everyone the tools to do this.
