Happy New Year!

All at Excelsys would like to wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. To kick off the year, we are delighted to send you the first of our newsletters of 2013.

 

We are delighted to announce that we have increased the standard warranty on our market leading configurable Xgen power supply range to 3 years. We have been able to offer our customers this increased warranty on our Xgen power supplies after observing six years of consistent field demonstrated reliability since launch in  2006. The proven reliability in the field is backed up by MTBF figures as well as detailed HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Test) report data, all of which have been key to us offering the longest warranty in this market segment. In this newsletter, we outline this HALT Report process in detail. 

 

This editions technical article is "Shrinking a power supply and the challenge to maintain high reliability", written by our Director of Applications Engineering, Shane Callanan. The article examines challenges facing a power supply designer and how to achieve a balance between size reduction and maintaining reliability.

Excelsys HALT Report
At Excelsys Technologies we subject all our products to the HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) process to uncover design and/or process weaknesses.

Poor reliability, low MTBF, frequent field returns, high in-warranty costs, and customer dissatisfaction are often the result of design and/or process weaknesses, even if a product has successfully passed qualification tests and burn-in. During the HALT process, the product is subjected to progressively higher stress levels brought on by thermal dwells, vibration, rapid temperature transitions and combined environments.

These stimuli are well beyond the expected operating field environments, and so give us a huge degree of confidence about the long term performance and reliability of our Xgen products. The latest manifestation of this confidence is the increase in our standard warranty for the Xgen range to 3 years, the longest in this field.

As power supply sizes decrease, component temperatures need to be kept low to avoid the risk of reduced reliability.
