The Comparison Project: Community Interfaith Dialogue
Thursday, February 11, 7:00 p.m.
Dunn's Chapel, Iles Funeral Homes
2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines

Moderator: Norma Hirsch, Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University
Panelists: Robert Aubrey, Chaplain (retired), Unity Point & Broadlawns; David Kaufman, Rabbi, Temple B'nai Jeshurun; Yogesh Shah, Associate Dean, Des Moines University

How do the religions of the world understand death and dying? What rituals do they practice as preparation for death and in response to death? What effects has the "medicalization of death" had on these traditional understandings and practices? And what does the medical community need to know about traditional religious theologies and rituals related to death and dying?

The Comparison Project's Community Interfaith Dialogue will explore these questions from the perspectives of Judaism, Catholicism, and Buddhism. The moderator and panelists will focus particularly on the tensions between traditional theologies and rituals of death and the way in which death has increasingly become the domain of medicine and law. There will be ample time for questions from the audience.

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2014, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 41,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on nearly 40 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
