The Iowa Interfaith Exchange is just a few weeks away! In addition to our keynote presentation by author Peter Manseau, we will have six breakout sessions available that afternoon. Panel Discussion: Religions of Des Moines' Refugee Communities

Des Moines' incredible religious diversity is richly informed by the immigrant and refugee communities it has welcomed. This panel will explore the histories, opportunities, and challenges of four such communities: the Vietnamese Buddhist temple on SW 9th (Tu Vien Hong Duc), the Bosnian Muslim mosque on Douglas (Ezan Islamic and Educational Center), the Swahili-speaking community from Burundi, Congo, and Rwanda that meets at Urban Heights Covenant Church, and the Bhutanese Hindu temple that meets in the basement of a private residence near Easter Lake. 
Islam as a Cultural System and the History of the Mother Mosque of America

Imam Taha Tawil, Mother Mosque of America

Imam Taha Tawil is the Executive Director of the Mother Mosque of America and serves as a Public Safety Chaplain for the Cedar Rapids Police Department. He was a Co-Founder of the Inter-Religious Council of Linn County and served as its President. He also served as a Civil Rights Commissioner for over 7 years for the City of Cedar Rapids.
Soto Zen Buddhism in Iowa

Rev. Eido Bruce Epse, Des Moines Zen Center

Eido is a Soto Zen priest in the lineage of Dainin Kagagiri Roshi. In 1997, Eido received ordination. In 2010, he received Dharma transmission from his teacher Shoken Winecoff and completed zuise at Eiheiji Monastery and Sojiji Monastery in Japan.

Although it is arguably the oldest branch of Christianity, Orthodox Christianity and its diverse traditions remain relatively unknown to the American public. This panel will showcase four of the Orthodox Christian communities in Des Moines. We will hear about Orthodox Christianity's fidelity to tradition as well as its mystical theology and practices.
A Current Look at Paganism/Wicca in Iowa

Deborah Maynard, Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans

Deborah Maynard is an ordained Wiccan Priestess. She will be speaking on what it's like for individuals in Iowa to come out of the broom closet (yes, that's what it's called), and how the community has come together in the past couple of decades. Deborah will also provide a brief overview of Paganism, Witchcraft, and Wicca, and how they compare to modern spiritual trends.
Seeking a New Jerusalem: The Mormon Trails Across Iowa and Beyond

19th century Iowa played a prominent role as early Mormons made their travels across the state seeking to build a New Jerusalem. These travels, often provoked by prejudice and persecution, represent an important chapter in the religious and social history of the Midwest.
