Des Moines Area Hunger Hike 2015
|
|
Hundreds of people of all ages, a cross section of faiths and denominations, will gather at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, to "walk that more may eat." This event, the 46th annual Des Moines Area Hunger Hike, will begin and end at the east side of the Norman Borlaug Hall of Laureates, 100 Locust Street, where Ambassador (retired) Kenneth M. Quinn, President of the World Food Prize Foundation, will address the assembled hikers. Nora Tobin, Executive Director of Self-Help International, will provide the keynote address, typifying some thirty local and international agencies that benefit from Hunger Hike funds.
Prior to the Hike, members of congregations and other organizations will have collected contributions to be allocated among missions, shelters, seed programs, senior meals, and other ongoing programs that provide free food to needy persons. 2014 receipts provided $43,131 for milk for an inner-city breakfast program, climate-adapted vegetable seeds for developing countries, meals for homeless and violence shelters, and other emergency needs. With the effects of violence, adverse climate, and depressed economy accelerating the poverty rate in many areas, the goal for the 2015 Hike is $50,000.00. Hikers are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Des Moines Religious Council's Food Pantries.
This year's route is approximately 3.2 miles, with much of the Hike along the Principal Riverwalk. The Hike is the visual symbol of those who must exert excessive physical efforts in hope of obtaining food and water for daily sustenance. Music by local performers will waken the feet of the hikers. They will be entertained by cold drinks and snacks with more music on their return and will be given the opportunity to tour the Hall of Laureates.
Held each year since 1969, the Des Moines Area Hunger Hike is the opening event of Hunger Awareness Week, just before World Food Day (October 16th). It is the grassroots forerunner to the Iowa Hunger Summit on Tuesday, and capped by the World Food Prize award Thursday night. More than fifty congregations participated in this community-wide effort in 2014.
All interested persons are invited to join this forty-sixth annual Hike by walking and turning in contributions collected beforehand. Individuals or groups of walkers from congregations or other organizations are welcome. No prior registration is necessary; collection packets may be obtained by emailing desmoineshungerhike@gmail.com. Donations may also be mailed to: Des Moines Area Hunger Hike, P.O. Box 489, Des Moines, IA 50302 or made on-site at www.desmoineshungerhike.org. The Des Moines Area Hunger Hike is an autonomous non-profit organization composed entirely of volunteers who take pride in holding promotional expenses to less than three percent of receipts so that more hungry people may be fed.

This Assembly, we'll be learning more about minority religions in Des Moines, as told through words and photographs. The presentation will focus on five faith communities in Des Moines: Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Greek Orthodox and Muslim.
Timothy Knepper is a professor of philosophy at Drake University, where he chairs the Department of Philosophy and Religion and directs The Comparison Project, a public program in comparative philosophy of religion. He teaches and publishes in the philosophy of religion, comparative religion, late ancient Neoplatonism, and mystical discourse. He is the author of books on the future of the philosophy of religion (The Ends of Philosophy of Religion, Palgrave, 2013) and the sixth-century Christian mystic known as Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (Negating Negation, Wipf & Stock, 2014).
With a long career as an urban planner, Bob Blanchard came to Des Moines to manage the development of a new comprehensive plan and rewrite of land development regulations for the City.
