The 13th Annual Hy-Vee Colossal Cookie Sale is Almost Here!
|
|
The 13th Annual Hy-Vee Colossal Cookie Sale is just around the corner! From September 13-26, Hy-Vee cookies are just $0.12, or you can buy 100 for $10.99!
For each cookie sold, Hy-Vee will donate a penny's worth of food to the DMARC Food Pantry Network. Since 2003, Hy-Vee has donated over $85,000 through the Colossal Cookie Sale!
Now in its 13th year, the Colossal Cookie Sale has sold over 8.5 million cookies in total. This year, we're aiming for an all-time record number to push the total to 10 million cookies sold!
You can help us reach this goal in the following ways:
- Remind your congregation of the Colossal Cookie Sale
- Download a flyer to hang up or share
- Purchase cookies for your congregation, small group, sports team or workplace
- Get the word out on social media using the hashtag #10MillionCookies
- Share, retweet, and 'like' our social media activity
We are also looking for Sack Saturday volunteers to provide extra on-location promotion at Hy-Vee stores on the following dates:- Saturday, September 12 (the day before the sale begins)
- Saturday, September 19 (halfway point of the sale)
- Saturday, September 26 (final day of the sale)
In addition to regular Sack Saturday volunteer duties, these volunteers will help pass out promotional material for the Colossal Cookie Sale, and encourage shoppers to support the DMARC Food Pantry Network through the sale.
If you would like to organize a group to volunteer at a Sack Saturday event, please contact Red Barrel Coordinator John Robinson, 515-277-6969 x18.
Thank you, Hy-Vee, and everyone who participates in the Colossal Cookie Sale! |

Trinity UMC/Las Americas Seeking ELL Volunteers
|
|
Trinity UMC/Las Americas have been offering ESL classes one morning and two evenings a week through our English Language Learners program since 2001. Although we started with just one teacher and one student, we have expanded to include over 30 volunteer teachers and teacher's assistants and almost 200 students. As our program has grown, so have the services that we have been able to offer. We now include social events a few times a year and provide free childcare during evening classes. Last year, we had almost 100 infants, toddlers, and school-aged children registered for childcare. Through the ELL program, we have been able to offer much-needed English instruction to immigrants and refugees in our neighborhood, and thus enable them to find better jobs, healthcare, educational opportunities, and ultimately, a home here in Des Moines.
Our program thrives on the relationships we have been able to build between volunteers, students, staff members, and community members. We would love to be able to form a relationship with you as well. We are looking for volunteer teachers, teacher's assistants, and childcare helpers who would be able to donate time one or two nights a week. We offer orientation, training, and the chance to become part of a welcoming, international community in exchange. We can also always use donations of supplies for classes and childcare-3-ring notebooks, dry erase markers and erasers, bilingual or monolingual dictionaries, ESL textbooks, small cups, coffee mugs, napkins, sugar, creamer, coffee, animal crackers, and juice. Any way that you would like to contribute would be much appreciated. Contact Veronica Stafford at vista@trinityumcdm.org or (515)-771-6591 to get started.

Who Are We?
The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.
The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2014, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 41,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.
MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on nearly 40 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat. |
