The Donation of the Month for July is beans! The DMARC Food Pantry Network distributes both canned beans and dried beans. Beans are high in protein, and contain other essential vitamins and minerals, such as Iron, Magnesium and Vitamin C.
Canned beans are included in our monthly food boxes, provided they meet our healthy food guidelines. Pork and beans are high in sugar, fat and salt, and do not meet our guidelines for monthly food boxes. Any food donations we receive that do not meet these guidelines are still distributed throughout the Network as supplemental food items.
Dried beans, along with rice, Meals from the Heartland / Outreach, Inc. meal packages, donated produce and donated bread products, are available daily at food pantries for those seeking assistance.

Food Pantry Network Updates
|
|
There have recently been a few changes at locations in the DMARC Food Pantry Network.
Partnership Place (Johnston) and West Des Moines Human Services now serve all of Greater Des Moines. Their clothing closets are still limited to residents of their respective communities.
CROSS Ministries is now a choice pantry.
These changes have been made on our website, and an updated flyer can be found below. |

Are you ready...to beat the summer heat?
|
|
The hot and humid summer days are finally here! Each year, the Polk County Health Department starts preparing for extreme heat weather conditions in an effort to keep our community safe and healthy. Unfortunately, every summer in the state of Iowa and throughout the United States, individuals are hospitalized or die from heat related illnesses. Extreme heat kills more Americans each year than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes and floods combined.
Extreme heat weather conditions happen when there are periods of high temperatures and high humidity with little overnight cooling. For the body to cool itself, the body sweats and the moisture evaporates off of the skin. High heat and humidity after periods of cooler weather can be a shock to the bodies of people who aren't accustomed to the heat yet, especially older adults, very young children and people with chronic health conditions. When it is humid out, evaporation doesn't take place and the body cannot cool as well. Your body temperature can increase to a fatal 106 degrees in as little as 10-15 minutes and heat stroke can happen. Heat stroke is an emergency situation and can be life threatening. Signs and symptoms to watch for include shock, unconsciousness and seizures.
Take the following precautions to prevent heat related illnesses and death:
- If you work or spend time outside, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Drink a lot of cold water and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Do not wait until you are thirsty. If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages and instead drink cold water throughout the day.
- Call family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning to make sure they are okay.
- Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing.
- Never leave children or pets alone in a vehicle for any length of time.
- Spend at least two hours a day in air conditioning to avoid heat related illnesses.
Many public places like malls, libraries, senior centers, are air conditioned and are open to the public as daytime cooling centers. Two hours in air conditioning can significantly reduce the risk of health problems. For a full list of daytime cooling centers, visit the Polk County Health Department's website at polkcountyiowa.gov/health/ or call 211 to find a location closest to you.

Who Are We?
The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.
The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2013, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 34,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.
MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on nearly 40 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat. |
