eVoice - June 16, 2015

"My electric is being shut off. I'm 56 years old and I've been sick. Savings went to pay medical bills and care for my grandnephew - he's 2 years old. I don't have custody, but I'm all he's got. It will be 3 months before I can go back to my CNA job. We've been making ends meet, but the cost of diapers - and the unexpected hospital bills ... I owe the utility company $237. There's just no money.  I've always paid my way..." - Sandi.

Sandi's experience is not unlike hundreds of families that visit a DMARC food pantry for the first time.

Desperation. Guilt. Anxiety. Desolation. Hopelessness. These are the constant companions of our neighbors who face uncertainty about how they will provide for themselves or their loved ones.

The plea for help comes in many forms and from countless directions.

And, in an interfaith language of hope and help, DMARC answers.

In these times of extraordinary need, we are grateful for your commitment and generosity that help DMARC continue to make a difference in the lives of thousands of families like Sandi's each month.

Thank you!

Des Moines Discussion on Pope Francis' Encyclical on Climate Change
Interfaith Power and Light
Pope Francis will release his encyclical, or teaching, on climate change on June 18th. Come learn more about this momentous statement and be part of the conversation.

On Tuesday, June 16th at 6:30 pm, the DM Interfaith Green Coalition is presenting a "Pre-Encyclical" discussion on climate action and the Catholic Church.  The discussion will be about both the science of climate change and the faith based justification for action in the Catholic Church.

The event will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3663 66th St, Urbandale, IA 50322.

The presenters: Bill Cox and Jim Obradovich

Bill Cox is a retired physics professor who taught at Dowling Catholic High School for 42 years.  He has presented on climate change over 60 times since 2006. Many of these presentations have been for Iowa Interfaith Power & Light.

Jim Obradovich is a Deacon with Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverdale.  Jim is also a government relations consultant in Des Moines, and has been for 22 years.

This event isn't just for Catholics, and this Encyclical will not just impact the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world. Rather, it provides the inspiration and momentum for all of us to speak out.

Join Us June 18, 2015! The door opens at 11:00 a.m. with pizza at 11:30 a.m. and followed by a brief presentation by Dr. Mark Majors on a current, relevant pastoral care issue. His Biblically based psychological approach to issues has proven to be a help to pastors and church leaders for over 22 years.

This Month's Topic: Youth Pastors, Oh My

Pizza and Pastors is held in de Kelder at the Relationship Enrichment Center (formerly the Strawtown Inn) at 1111 Washington Street, Pella.

Who Are We?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2013, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 34,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on nearly 40 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
