February 10 Winter Thaw Sessions
The Creative Power of God and the Four Elements
This course will examine texts in the Jewish tradition that show how God uses Earth, Water, Fire and Air in the creation narrative. Other narratives will be discussed as well which demonstrate how the Jewish tradition sees the Four Elements in relation to God's power and interaction with our world.
Rabbi David Kaufman has been the spiritual leader of Temple B'nai Jeshurun since the spring of 2003. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and graduate degrees from Duke University and Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. Rabbi Kaufman serves on a number of organizational boards of trustees including DMARC.

Significance of Five Primal Elements in Hinduism
In this discourse, Pramod will describe the five primal elements, their role in this universe as described in the ancient Hindu literature, and their significance to life as described in the ancient Hindu literature. He will attempt to interpret these ideas in today's context.
Born, brought up and educated in India, Pramod Mahajan has lived in the USA for 32 years, 22 of those in the Des Moines metro area. Pramod is a biochemist/molecular biologist by training, teaches at Drake University and lives in Grimes with wife Prachi Mahajan, a DMACC employee. Pramod and Prachi have two adult children and a granddaughter. Prachi and Pramod enjoy serving the community they live in.

Sand Painting - Ephemeral Art and the Element of Time
This course will explore the ancient art of sand painting as a spiritual practice. This medium, not unlike music, offers an opportunity to be fully present to the present moment.
