eVoice - October 7, 2014

Autumn is arriving, and things are busy at DMARC. With next week's Iowa Hunger Summit, our West Des Moines pantry transitioning to 'choice options' later this month, and many other events and food drives happening, we want to say thank you for your continued support of DMARC/MovetheFood. We are especially grateful this week for members of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, who donated 406 food items and $786 during their Yom Kippur service last Friday. Thank you to one and all!  And now, your eVoice...

The Comparison Project: "That From Which All Words Return"
Join The Comparison Project this Thursday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. for "That From Which All Words Return": The Distinctive Methods of Language Utilization in Hinduism's Philosophical Tradition of Advaita Vedanta. The event features Anantanand Rambachan, Professor of Religion at St. Olaf College, and will be held at Sussman Theater in the Olmstead Center at Drake University.

Advaita is a non-dual Vedānta tradition within Hinduism, based on an exegesis of the
Upaniṣads, the final sections of the Vedas. Its principal systematizer and exponent is Śaṅkara (ca. 8th CE). Advaita regards the words of the Upanṣads as a valid source for our knowledge of the limitless (brahman). Speaking about brahman, however, is challenging. Brahman is not one object among other objects and is not available for observation through objectification. It possesses none of the characteristics through which words are usually able to describe a subject. Advaita offers a skillful mode of instruction about brahman, employing finite word-symbols to speak of the infinite. This lecture will consider this predicament and the methods employed in the texts and tradition to deal with the limits of language.

Anantanand Rambachan is Professor of Religion at Saint Olaf College, Minnesota, where he
has taught since 1985. His books include, Accomplishing the Accomplished: The Vedas as a
Source of Valid Knowledge in Śaṅkara, The Limits of Scripture: Vivekananda's Reinterpretation of the Authority of the Vedas, The Advaita Worldview: God, World and Humanity, and A Hindu Theology of Liberation: Not-Two is Not One. The British Broadcasting Corporation transmitted a series of 25 lectures on Hinduism by Professor Rambachan around the world.

"Meet the Mormons" Film Release

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints invites you to join in viewing the stories of six ordinary people from around the world. Their experiences are diverse, but they are united by faith and a desire to live meaningful lives. A new movie, Meet the Mormons, proposes to help people see Mormons through the lens of their normal lives rather than the lens of common stereotypes or misconceptions. You will be surprised by what you learn, but it won't be theology. This isn't a movie about doctrines or structures; it's a documentary about ordinary people with extraordinary stories.

This limited engagement release will only be showing in select theaters across the country, and we are fortunate that one of them is at the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines. Showtimes will be posted on the Jordan Creek website beginning October 7th: jordancreektowncenter.com/movies

The film opens on October 10th. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Who Are We?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2013, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 34,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on nearly 40 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
