eVoice - September 30, 2014

In this eVoice, we invite you to join us at the Iowa Hunger Summit and Des Moines Zombie Walk. There are also upcoming community events, which can be found below.
Iowa Hunger Summit
The Iowa Hunger Summit will be held on Tuesday, October 14, at the Downtown Marriott in Des Moines. The annual summit of groups and individuals involved in projects to confront hunger was established by The World Food Prize Foundation as a means to celebrate Iowa's success in fighting hunger and poverty and to unite in further action against both.

DMARC is excited to once again be participating in the Iowa Hunger Summit, and we hope to see you there! The event is free and open to the public, but participants must register before and present their ticket at the door.
Des Moines Zombie Walk 2014 this Weekend
Central Iowa Shelter & Services' Des Moines Zombie Walk will be held this Saturday, October 4, in Downtown Des Moines. CISS is a partner pantry site within the DMARC Food Pantry Network. DMARC will have a stand in the Kids' Zone Bazaar. Come stop by and say, "BRAAIINSS!"

If you haven't already registered for the Des Moines Zombie Walk, make sure to do so! They are also still in need of volunteers. For more information, visit www.desmoineszombiewalk.com.

Sesshin at Des Moines Zen Center
A sesshin is a meditation retreat that offers a chance to deepen your meditation practice. Sesshins can vary in length and schedule but usually consist of multiple sessions of walking and sitting meditation, a formal meal, a dharma talk, a short work period and chants.

The retreat begins Friday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m., at the Des Moines Zen Center, with an orientation, sitting meditation (zazen) and the recitation of the Fukanzazengi (page 20). Saturday begins at 8:00 a.m. and will finish at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck. Additional sutras chanted on Saturday will include Jijuyu Zammai (page 16) and the Dai Hi Shin Dharani (page 14).

No prerequesites for participation in the retreat. Experience with a few sessions of zazen is encouraged. Email the Des Moines Zen Center if you plan on joining the retreat so enough tea and lunch is prepared. Donations to cover the costs of the retreat are welcomed.

Who Are We?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2013, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 34,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on nearly 40 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
