12th Annual Hy-Vee Colossal Cookie Sale
The 12th Annual Hy-Vee Colossal Cookie sale will once again be held this year from September 7 to September 22! Since the Cookie Sale began in 2003, Hy-Vee stores have sold over 8.5 million cookies and have donated more than $85,000 in food products to DMARC's network of neighborhood pantries in greater Des Moines. Last year, Hy-Vee Food Stores from across the greater Des Moines area sold 552,617 cookies, and DMARC received over $5,500 in groceries for the Food Pantry Network.
DSM Open SW 9th Street
This Sunday, September 7, from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m., SW 9th St. between Watrous and Park Avenue will be closed to traffic and open to the public! What can you expect? Local musicians, arts and crafts, chalk art, mascots, bounce house, food vendors, physical challenge, free games and prizes, and much more! DMARC is co-sponsoring this event, make sure to swing by our stand and say hello!
The Beggarmen at Anchor Coffee House
Westminster's Anchor Coffee House kicks off its 13th season on September 6 at 6:00 p.m., with Irish folk group The Beggarman. In 2011, The Beggarmen celebrated their tenth year as one of the region's best Irish music ensembles. Since their first performance at a small pub in Iowa, the band has gone on to headline at folk festivals and concert halls throughout the Midwest, greeting audiences with their unique style of Irish folk music. Westminster's Anchor Coffee House is an intimate, family-friendly venue featuring entertainment by up-and-coming artists from across the state and around the country, along with delicious refreshments.  As a special perk for parents, free childcare is always available.  The Anchor House season runs from fall to spring, with events approximately every other month.

Tickets for The Beggarmen are $12 in advance, or $15 at the door.

Season tickets are also on sale now for $60 each (for six shows)... a savings of $20 adv/$45 door! Tickets are available in advance online (will call), at Westminster Church (call 274-1534 to purchase with credit card) and at Uptempo Music in Beaverdale, or at the door for a slightly higher fee.  If you purchase a season ticket, you get a free mug!

Des Moines Interfaith Dialogue
Des Moines Interfaith Dialogue will be holding a meeting tonight, Septemeber 2, from 6:45 - 7:45 p.m. at Franklin Avenue Library, 5000 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines.

Des Moines Interfaith Dialogue (DID) brings people of different religious backgrounds into a shared space to discuss topics of religion. DID and its participants operate under the attitude of respect, civility and compassion. DID hopes to bring religious-harmony by decreasing religious fear and increasing religious awareness toward a better humanity.

Interfaith Prayer for Peace
An Interfaith Prayer for Peace will be held this Sunday, September 7, from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Ambrose, 607 High St. in Des Moines.  All are welcome. The Heartland Chamber Choir will provide special music. Prayers for peace in Israel and Palestine, Central America, Africa, and the Ukraine.
8-Week Tai Chi Session at Westminster

Westminster Church will begin a new 8-week session of Tai Chi classes on September 4, on Thursday nights. Beginners class runs from 5:15-6:30 p.m., Chi Dong from 6:30-7:00 p.m. and Intermediates from 7:00-8:00 p.m. The classes are taught by Ruth Kneile. Registration is $55 per person or $90 per family and takes place the first night of class.

Johnston Alternative Gift Market
Raise funds and awareness for your ministry or organization at the first annual Johnston Alternative Gift Market to be held Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Presbyterian Church, 6426 Merle Hay Road in Johnston.

3rd Annual Pedal for the House
Bring the family out to support the children and families of the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House! Ride your bike along the High Trestle Trail and check out the bike raffles along the way. Bike raffles at Flat Tire Lounge, Nite Hawk Bar & Grill, and the Whistlin' Donkey. Raffle tickets available at each location throughout the summer and during the event. Join us at Flat Tire Lounge after the event for prizes, raffle, silent auction, and live auction. Prizes include gift certificates, bike gear and more! Cost is $30 before the race and $35 the day of the race.
Meditation Workshop and Dialogue
The Comparison Project will kick off its 2014-2015 lecture series with a Meditation Workshop and Dialogue on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event features six local meditation instructors, each of whom will teach classes on their meditative practice, and then engage in dialogue with one another about these practices. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and engage in several of the techniques. The meditation instructors and techniques include:

Charlie Day, founder of the Des Moines Meditation Group, will teach universal breath meditation. 

Eido Epse, head priest at the Des Moines Zen Center and vice abbot of the Ryumonji Zen Monastery in Dorchester, Iowa, will teach Zen shikantaza ("just sitting") meditation.

Betty Ruth Krueger, author and senior meditation instructor with the Art of Living Foundation, will teach pratyahara ("substitute food for mind") meditation, in the tradition of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras.

Prasad Palakurthy, cardiologist at UnityPoint Health and yoga instructor at the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Iowa, will teach Hindu Kundalini Yoga.

Kathy Reardon, spiritual director in practice at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center and commissioned presenter of centering prayer by Contemplative Outreach International, will teach centering prayer.

Father Silouan, an Eastern Orthodox rassaphor monk who has established close relationships with the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George and St. Demetrius Serbian Orthodox Church, will teach the Orthodox Christian mystical eremitic prayer tradition, hesychasm.
Who Are We?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

 

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2013, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 34,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.

 

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 37 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
