There are two great volunteer opportunities this month for those interested: The Loving Kindness Tour and Meals from the Heartland's 7th Annual Hunger Fight. In the next week, there will also be two speaker events held. First, a conversation on today's media with David Barsamanian of Alternative Radio will be held on Friday, August 15. Then, a presentation by Jim Autry on Gratefulness and Generosity is scheduled for Sunday, August 17. Continue reading below for information on all these opportunities and events.

Drake University's Buy Fresh Buy Local, Rinehart's Family Farm, and Move the Food all came together last Thursday, August 7, to harvest 3 tons of fresh produce (sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini and onions), which was then distributed to DMARC Food Pantry Network partner sites! 7th Annual Meals from the Heartland Hunger Fight

Registration is underway for the 2014 Meals from the Heartland Annual Hunger Fight on August 27-30 at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines. Meals from the Heartland is inviting students, parents, family, and all community members to volunteer and help package 5 million meals this year! Volunteers are needed for packaging, but there is also a need for floor support volunteers. To learn more about the Hunger Fight and to register to volunteer, click the button below.

| Volunteer with The Loving Kindness Tour |

The Loving Kindness Tour is the Des Moines leg of the Maitreya Loving Kindness Tour. The Maitreya Project aims to bring long-term social and economic benefit to millions of people in northern India and sustained spiritual benefit to the world community.
It is expected that several thousand people will attend this event. Many volunteers are needed to help facilitate a smooth running events and create a positive experience for attendees. There are 2 to 3 shifts available each day of the tour and 25-40 volunteers are needed per shift. We encourage you to sign-up for volunteer positions across as many shifts as you would like. Please do not sign-up for more than one position per shift, but you can sign up for multiple shifts.

A Discussion of Media Today with David Barsamanian

"From Walter Cronkite to Fox News: A Discussion of Media Today with David Barsamanian" will be held on Friday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Quaker Meeting House, 4211 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. The event is free and open to the public.
David Barsamian is best known for his decades-long collaboration with Noam Chomsky. He has interviewed and published the work of Chomsky, the most well-known intellectual of our time.The Founder of Alternative Radio and heard on NPR and on 150 stations around the globe, Barsamian will be interviewed by Jeffrey J. Weiss, with questions from the audience.AR has recently featured Glenn Greenwald, Vandana Shiva, Dennis Kucinich, Jeremy Scahill, and Bill McKibben. Jim Autry, local poet, author, churchman, spiritual reflector, and former businessman will speak on Gratefulness and Generosity during the Learning Hour (11:00-noon) August 17, at First Christian Church, 25th and University, Des Moines. This program is free and open to the public.

Who Are We?
The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of over 130 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.
The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 12 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and eight sites in Des Moines. In 2013, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 34,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half of whom are children and youth.
MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 37 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat. |
