Thank you for the incredible response to last week's request for diapers. We were able to raise enough money for two full pallets of diapers! These are a great help for the families and children that we serve. We truly appreciate your generous donations.

In this issue, learn about The Loving Kindness Tour, taking place from August 15-24, how to donate your excess garden produce to DMARC, a community gathering for Israel, an anti-nuclear weapon remembrance and peace vigil, supporting Hope for the Hungry through bulb sales, and Mental Health and English classes.

The Loving Kindness Tour is the Des Moines leg of the Maitreya Loving Kindness Tour. The Maitreya Project aims to bring long-term social and economic benefit to millions of people in northern India and sustained spiritual benefit to the world community.
Over 6,800 people visited the Tour in Des Moines in 2012. In response to this enthusiastic reception, the exhibition of sacred relics of the Buddha and Buddhist masters returns to our community for an extended period. Please join us in this celebration of the loving kindness present in all living beings and commemoration of the love, compassion and wisdom that radiates from these sacred relics. There will be special activities for children and pets, personal blessings and an opening ceremony.
The Loving Kindness Tour will be held from August 15-24 at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. On August 14, a Healing Concert by Wah! will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for the concert online. The Loving Kindness Tour itself is free admission. Check The Loving Kindness Tour website for touring hours. |

Donate Your Excess Garden Produce to DMARC
|
|
DMARC is always accepting fresh produce donations, thanks to our new facility and large walk-in coolers. During the summer, we have extended our office hours to make donating our garden produce even easier. In addition to normal warehouse hours, we are open an hour earlier on Tuesdays and Thursdays (7:00 a.m.), as well as being open for an hour on Saturday afternoons (1:00-2:00 p.m.). Don't wait until your harvest is ripe, bring it in before to ensure it stays fresh when it reaches our food pantry clients!

Community Gathering for Israel
|
|
Rabbi Edelman-Blank invites you to a Community Gathering on Israel this Thursday, August 7, at 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Boulevard in Des Moines. Please RSVP to rabbiedelman-blank@tifereth.org.
The event will start with a fundraising for Stop the Sirens: Israel Under Fire. Stop the Sirens is a community-wide campaign responding to urgent needs in Israel. The fundraising effort is coordinated by Jewish Federations of North America on behalf of Federations across North America, and in partnership with the Union for Reform Judaism, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and Jewish Reconstructionist Communities.
The event will also have prayers for the State of Israel and the protection of its people. Finally, there will be an open discussion on the current conflict. This discussion will serve as an opportunity for community members to share their concerns and feelings about the conflict. It is not meant as a debate. As a holy community, we agree to disagree. The ability to ask questions and raise different perspectives has and continues to be a strength of Jewish religion and culture. |

Order Spring Bulbs and Support Hope for the Hungry
|
|
Are you planning to order spring bulbs for planting this fall? If so, please consider ordering them through Hope for the Hungry. 50% of your order will be given to Hope for the Hungry to support their Hunger in the Heartland documentary and resource guide.
The purpose of the documentary and resource guide is to build awareness of the hunger issues in the heartland and to give specific guidelines for local individuals and communities who want to help alleviate hunger in their area. The doc is being filmed by Tom Sawyer of TS Media; the resource guide authored by Debra Landwehr Engle of GoldenTree Communications.
The documentary and guide will be launched at the 6th Hope for the Hungry gathering which will be held at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ on November 8, 2014. Beaverdale Books will be selling the DVD/Guide package at a special one-day-only price at the gathering. Deb Engle will facilitate the day using the doc and guide to look at hunger, food and nutrition, what some folds are doing about it, and what we all can do back home. |
