Food Donations are Needed!
|
|
In the summer months, donations to the DMARC Food Pantry Network slump. We are currently in great need of donations to stock our shelves. Please consider donating today. Below is a list of some of the items in greatest need.
- Canned Soup (low sodium)
- Cereal (whole grain or healthy options)
- Fruit (canned in water or 100% juice)
- Large-size diapers
If you are not able to bring in a donation, please consider a monetary donation to DMARC. With our new 6,000 square foot warehouse, we are able to buy food wholesale at a good rate, as described by our Food Pantry Network Director Rebecca Whitlow in the video below.

New Study Links Food Insecurity and Maternal Depression
|
|
A new study by an Iowa State University professor and student links food insecurity and maternal depression in rural America.
"We wanted to look at the depressive level that mothers in rural areas were experiencing," said Kim Greder, an associate professor in human development and family studies and ISU Extension and Outreach family life state specialist. "The nugget that can be taken away from this is, 'Take care of mom. Make sure mom's mental health is good.'"
Greder's research shows 42 percent of the families interviewed suffer from food insecurity, according to completion of a U.S. Department of Agriculture household food insecurity module. She said this is directly related to 36 percent of the mothers interviewed suffering from depression, according to the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. (Continue Reading...)

Scholarship Offered in MidCity
|
|
The Jane Foundation, Inc. and Youth Incentives, Inc. are receiving applications from an anonymous donor for a $1000 maximum scholarship for the fall semester.
Guidelines include that it can awarded only to youth who are connected to the Des Moines MidCity and are graduated from any high school. The student or students selected can attend school fulltime or parttime and must completely fill out the application provided and get it passed in by Aug. 15, 2014.
"Connected to the MidCity" means that the student lived in the MidCity at one time, even if he or she does not live there now. MidCity perameters are roughly Hickman Rd. on the North; 2nd Ave. on the East; Route 235 on the South; and Martin Luther King Blvd. on the West. In other words, if the student has lived within a few blocks outside of these perameters, he or she is still eligible.
Call the Jane Foundation office prior to picking up the application at 515-280-5129. Applicants will likely need at least a week to get the answers completed.
Applicants may apply instead for the Mary Rife scholarship that is available only for anyone majoring in nursing. These applications are available from Mary Rife at 244-6419 or from DMACC. Due dates may differ from the scholarships described above.
