Bidwell Riverside Community Garden Project

Hunger in the Heartland is the title of a 30-minute documentary and companion resource guide being produced and published by the Coalition in Support of Hungry Children. Learn more about the project by accessing hopeforthehungry.blogspot.com. From the Hope for the Hungry site you can donate to help underwrite this important project. Watch the trailer below.
|
The purpose of the project is to increase awareness of what is a hidden hunger issue with 124,000 of Iowa's children, to inform about some Iowans who need food assistance and others who are helping to assist those who struggle with food insecurity. The documentary is being produced by Tom Sawyer of TS Media. The companion resource guide elaborates on the documentary's stories and gives specific, practical guidelines for individuals and groups that want to help alleviate childhood hunger in their local community. The guide is being written by Debra Landwehr Engle, author of many publications including Grace from the Garden: changing the world one garden at a time. Four questions interested folks can ask themselves: What's already being done here (where I live)? How can I help? What isn't being done that needs to be? What can I do to help initiate it?
Forty percent of the needed funds have been donated by 138 individuals and one corporation, Hy-Vee. I hope you will want to add your donation and your name to the growing list of folks, both local and far away, who want to help the Coalition reach the other 60% needed. If you are part of a corporation that would be interested in being part of this important project by donating some of their community support monies, contact Diana Sickles at dsickles4@gmail.com.

Do you have an old crock pot gathering dust in your basement? If so, would you consider donating it to the Coalition in Support of Hungry Children? They will be holding a class for low-income individuals to teach them the advantages of crock pot cooking. They will be given the crock pot to take home with them at the end of the class. The free class will be taught by Mary Krisco, ISU Extension. It will be scheduled to be held in early fall if enough crock pots are obtained to hold a class.
If you love to frequent garage sales and see a crock pot for sale at a reasonable price, consider buying it and donating it to the Coalition. If you have a crock pot to donate, contact Diana Sickles, Director of the Coalition, at 515-255-5055 or dsickles4@gmail.com. |

Alzheimer's Disease: When Life Changes
|
|
Dementia. Onece someone has been diagnosed, the elephant is always there, yet few want to see/admit it. So now what?
Join First United Methodist Church for a morning of information designed to assist caregivers in bridging the gap between the reality of a diagnosis and all the places it takes you including the physician's office, family gatherings, restaurants, and your favorite vacation spot. We will also address long-term care, including the necessary documents, options, costs and payer sources.
And finally, the "M" word. Just what is Medicaid, and why should most folks think twice before assuming it's the only option?
The workshop will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1001 Pleasant St., Des Moines on Saturday, August 2nd. Registration begins at 8:00 AM with a complimentary breakfast sponsored by Wesley Life and ends at noon. Space is limited, so register early by calling 515-244-6209.
