Hy-Vee Cookie Sale reaches total grocery donations of $85,098!

Colossal Cookie Sale 

This year, Hy-Vee Food Stores over the greater Des Moines area sold 552,617 cookies as part of the annual Colossal Cookie Sale benefiting the DMARC Food Pantry Network. Thanks to all who bought cookies. For each cookie sold, Hy-Vee is donating one penny of food products to DMARC. Since the Cookie Sale began in 2003, Hy-Vee stores have sold over 8.5 million cookies and have donated more than $85,000 in food products to DMARC's network of neighborhood pantries in greater Des Moines.

A reminder that the dedication of the Iowa Holocaust Memorial is Wednesday, October 23rd, at Noon, indoors at the Iowa Historical Society Bldg. (across from the memorial), 600 East Locust St., Des Moines. Scheduled speakers are Gov. Terry Branstad, Dr. Ann Millin, historial and a representative of the Iowa National Guard. The event is open to the public.  Program begins at Noon, followed by a light lunch. The memorial has been established in memory of the millions of victims of the Holocaust, in gratitude to the Iowans who, as members of the U.S. Armed Forces liberated the concentration camps, and in honor of the survivors who made lives for themselves and their families in Iowa.

The Drake University Comparison Project presents:

Barbara Stafford, Distinguished University Visiting Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Architecture. Ms. Stafford will be presenting "Paying Attention: The Fine Art and Neuroscience of Visual Awareness".  Stafford's research strives to find precise ways of bringing neurobiology, cognitive science, and the new philosophy of mind together with cultural phenomena without falling into reductivism on either side. Her most recent book is The Field Guide to a New Metafield: Bridging the Humanities-Neurosciences Divide. Join us on Thursday, October 24th, at 7pm, in the Cowles Library Reading Room on the Drake University campus. 

 

Team Wasike - A Day for Mike!

Your friends at Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Waukee, and Team Wasike would like to invite you and your congregation to a special fundraising event! Complete with live music, family fun, food, cash bar, and a live auction starting at 4pm, on Sunday, November 17th!

 

Mike, a God-fearing, legal immigrant from Kenya, was living in Des Moines and working two jobs. On a cold, snowy day last February, he was ruthlessly attacked in a car-jacking when he stopped to offer help to those he thought needed assistance. Mike was nearly beaten to death. Today, Mike is in a rehab more than 400 miles away from his wife and two children. He cannot walk, talk or see. But he can hear and understand.

Ways to help:

  • Pray for healing and Mike's return to his hometown.
  • Attend "A Day for Mike" auction event, Sunday, Nov. 17, 3-7pm, at the Iowa Events Center, downtown Des Moines.
  • Donate an item or experience for bid. Email a description of your donated auction item and your congregation name to [email protected], by Nov 8, 2013. Include the value of the item, your name and phone number for questions.
  • Provide a monetary donation.

Concert of Jewish Original Music is October 25th & 26th

On Friday, Oct. 25th, 6-7:15pm, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Blvd., Des Moines, Sheldon Low will lead the Friday evening service. This service will include a spiritual story and original upbeat music for the Sabbath. No charge.

On Saturday, Oct. 26th from 7:30 - 9:30 pm,  Sheldon Low will present a concert of Jewish original music with his band. Applications for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program taken at RRACAP & DMCAA

Starting Nov. 1 through April 30, both the RRACAP, 406 SW School St., Ste 201, Ankeny, IA and DMCAA, 1618 6th Ave. Des Moines, IA. Or call 515-965-0433, 515-248-6216, for more info (starts Oct. 1 for disabled). Applicants need to furnish ID, a copy of their most recent heating and electric bill, telephone bill and proof of all household members' gross income for the past three months or past calendar year. Assistance is based on household income, household size, type of fuel and other factors. Those who are over LIHEAP regular income guidelines may be eligible through the waiver component. This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs. 

NOTE: DMCAA will be closed on Friday, Oct. 25, from 11:30 - 5pm to prepare the LIHEAP program for the general public. This will include the choice food pantry.

 

Elder Rights and Protection webinar by Iowa Dept. on Aging and The Older Adult Council of the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church is November 19th, from 10-11:30am. This webinar will cover: Barriers to reporting, Perpetrators, Who they are and their tools, Indicators, Examples and Case studies, Tips on communicating with potential victims, Responses and strategies, What should clergy be observing when visiting church members in a care facility, If clergy suspect abuse in a home or facility, what should they do. Children and Family Urban Movement has a new name!
The new name, "Children and Family Urban Movement" reflects well that vision and hard work, faithfulness and innovation, are the people and resources at the heart of CFUM. The name change is not for the sake of change. It is change in line with the legacy CFUM received from its founding organization -- the congregation of Trinity United Methodist Church, for the last 20 years. In September, CFUM celebrated its 20th anniversary with a "Gala of Gratitude".
  

Health Insurance Enrollment Fairs at Broadlawns

Assistance with health insurance marketplace will be held November 2, 14, and December 7 at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. Nov. 14 is dedicated to the Hispanic patient population and will be open from 5-8pm. Nov. 2 and Dec. 7 are for the general public and are from 9am to 1pm. Choice Pantry Volunteers - DMCAA, Des Moines 

Located at 1618 6th St., the Des Moines Community Action Agency needs multiple volunteers to assist households by answering questions clients may have regarding food selection choices and assisting them with packaging their food. Volunteers are needed on a daily basis during Food Pantry's hours of operation. Hours are: Monday-Friday 11am to 12:45pm. Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays from 3-4:45pm and on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-6:45 pm. Who are we?

The Des Moines Area Religious Council is an interfaith organization with a core membership of about 140 congregations from four faith traditions. Recipient of the 2012 LIVE UNITED Advocate Award from the United Way of Central Iowa, DMARC provides a common means of responding to basic human needs and a context for interfaith dialogue.

 

The DMARC Food Pantry Network consists of 13 separate pantry sites, a centralized warehouse, and numerous community partners. It is the largest food pantry network in Iowa. Pantry sites are located in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Urbandale, and nine sites in Des Moines. In 2012, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted more than 33,000 individuals in the greater Des Moines community; half who are children and youth.

 

MovetheFood is a DMARC-led initiative to address the entire food system in Greater Des Moines, building on more than 36 years of the Food Pantry Network, catalyzing fresh generations, and engaging new constituencies to further support a vision for a day when everyone in Polk County has enough to eat.
