Greetings!
One of the missions of the Des Moines Area Religious Council is to enhance cross cultural and interfaith engagement in our community. The Comparison Project, is one opportunity you won't want to miss!
Tibetan Buddhist Monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery in India will be on Drake University's campus Sept. 9-13, 2013, creating a sand mandala and participating in a series of special cultural events that are free and open to the public. The creation of the sand mandala is an artistic tradition for Tibetan Buddhists and is a symbolic picture of the universe and its purpose is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones.

The mandala is created with millions of grains of colored sand, which is applied using small tube-like straws, funnels, and scrapers. Once completed, the mandala is destroyed, symbolizing the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life.
Visitors may view the ongoing construction of the sand mandala Monday through Friday in the Collier Heritage Room in Cowles Library between 9am and 5pm. More events are listed below:
- Monday, Sept. 9, 9am - Sand Mandala Opening Ceremony, Collier Heritage Room, Cowles Library
- Monday, Sept. 9, 7pm - Path of the Bodhisattva, lecture, Cowles Library Reading Room
- Tuesday, Sept. 10, 7pm - An Evening of Sacred Music and Dance, at Sheslow Auditorium
- Wednesday, Sept. 11, 7pm - World Peace and the Unity of all Religions, lecture, at Cowles Library Reading Room
- Thursday, Sept. 12, 7pm - Buddhist Community Dialogue, at Cowles Library Reading Room
- Friday, Sept. 13, 7pm - Sand Mandala Closing Ceremony, at Collier Heritage Room, Cowles Library
The Tibetan Monks are visiting as part of The Comparison Project (TCP) at Drake University, an experimental effort in a philosophy of religion that is historically grounded and religiously diverse. It is generously supported by the Drake University Humanities Center, Humanities Iowa, the Medbury Fund, the Drake University Principal Financial Group Center for Global Citizenship, the Des Moines Area Religious Council, and Cultivating Compassion: The Richard Deming Foundation.

The horrific nature of sexual abuse and the trauma of war and military combat are not human experiences we like to think about deeply, yet understanding these experiences is crucial to life together in our communities. The concepts of "moral injury" and "community responsibility" are common threads we will use to weave together these two topics so critical to the health and welfare of our country. Target audience is a multidisciplinary group of health care providers (physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, criminal justice staff, attorneys, judicial employees, chaplains, pastors, psychotherapists, military personnel, etc.) who are responsible for the care of victims of sexual abuse and/or soldiers suffering from moral injury due to war and/or military sexual assault. We need to increase public appreciation for the responsibility we all carry for injuries sustained and address the lack of resources for the healing required. Cost is $60 and includes lunch. Register online. Sponsored by the Des Moines University and Geral Blanchard, author of Transcending Trauma.
