Spring Break - a time when students, and many parents, dream of leaving Iowa for sandy beaches, warm sunshine and relaxation. But this year, Meals from the Heartland is providing a great memory-making alternative that offers the dream of helping fellow Iowans, camaraderie among friends and family and warm hearts in exchange for a couple of hours and/or a donation!
On Tuesday, March 19 through Thursday, March 21 people of all ages* are invited to register to pack meals and donate funds to our event goal of packaging 750,000 meals at the Elwell Family Food Center at Iowa State Fairgrounds for food-insecure people in Iowa and around the world!
The event is also a great opportunity for high school students to earn volunteer hours. You don't need to travel outside of Iowa to make special memories this Spring Break!
Details: Register for 2-hour packaging shifts are available from 8:30am to 6:30pm during the 3-day period, or 5-hour pod/host worker shifts. Registration is open for both - sign up now!

Documentary description:
Fifty million people in the U.S.-one in four children-issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford.
Ultimately, A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides - as they have in the past - that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all.
Reviewers had this to say:
"The Sundance Film Festival is chock full of documentaries this year about the troubles besetting America... but A PLACE AT THE TABLE may rank AMONG THE MOST MOVING in that it tackles a seemingly straightforward, solvable problem: hunger in the United States." - LA Times
"A PLACE AT THE TABLE is an ENGAGING AND ENRAGING movie that will enlist supporters for its cause." - Variety
