In an effort to reduce the number of animals used in the registration and testing of cosmetics in China, US non-profit laboratory, the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), provided in-depth training for scientists from the Zhejiang Food and Drug Administration's Institute for Food and Drug Control (ZJFDA IFDC).

The course focused on laboratory techniques using more predictive and human relevant test methods such as reconstructed human skin and eye models. The training was designed to assist the agency
in adopting non-animal methods as a means to evaluate and monitor cosmetic products manufactured in the Zhejiang province.
IIVS Study Director Emilia Costin to Present at Biocides USA
IIVS Study Director, Dr. Emilia Costin, will present on the global acceptance of in vitro methods at Biocides USA 2016. The two-day conference on Jan. 26 & 27 in Washington, DC will bring together experts from the USA and Europe to discuss the latest developments in the US while Day Two will focus on the regulatory landscape of biocidal products in the rest of the world.

Dr. Costin's presentation, "Current Political Climate - Global Acceptance of In Vitro Methods" on Day One will cover:
  • Drivers of in vitro methods.
  • Beyond the "six pack" battery of acute toxicity tests: Are in vitro methods used for any of the following end points?
  • Steps to accomplish global harmonization of the hazard classification schemes.

Attendees from industry, regulatory agencies, and consultants are encouraged to attend. Learn more and register

IIVS Study Director Dr. Kimberly Norman on the Use of Non-Animal Methods for Eye and Skin Safety Assessment
IIVS Study Director, Dr. Kimberly Norman, generated much interest with her presentation, "Current Approaches for Assessing Eye and Skin Safety of Cosmetics Using Non-Animal Methods" at the Personal Care Product Council's Science Symposium and Expo on Oct. 20-21 in Newark, NJ.

Dr. Norman highlighted recent OECD Test Guideline methods for the assessment of skin sensitization. To learn more about these assays or how they can be combined in a tiered testing approach, please contact Dr. Norman at [email protected].

Presentations from Alternative Approaches for Identifying Acute Systemic Toxicity Now Available
Presentations from the Sept. 24-25 workshop on Alternative Approaches for Identifying Acute Systemic Toxicity: Moving from Research to Regulatory Testing are now available on the NICEATM website.

Representatives from regulatory agencies, academia, and industry attended this workshop to develop strategies for advancing alternative methods for product safety testing that meet the needs of regulatory agencies. IIVS Chief Operating Officer, Hans Raabe, attended.

The workshop was co-organized by NICEATM, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and PETA International Science Consortium Ltd., and was held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The workshop proceedings will be submitted for publication early next year.
