Butler Winery's Brew Supply
February 2013
Greetings!

Believe it or not, spring will be here before you know it and I know atleast I am hoping it is sooner than later! Our hop growers have informed us roots will be shipping to us around late March so we need to get our pre-orders in to them by March 1st. If you want to grow some hops, read on below to find out more. If not, well, just skip it and go on down to the list of some new & cool things you will find in the shop.  Or just come see us soon and forget all the reading.
 Put your root down

If you are a homebrewer, something to consider is growing your own hops. They generally require little upkeep, they grow quickly, are nice to look at & may even yield a little something for brewing with on the very first year!  If you've always wanted to, or are just now thinking about it, now is the time to get in your orders! Rhizomes coming in from our west coast growers will ship to us the week of  March 30th.

You can go to the brewing supplies page on our website to find detailed info on which varieties are best for your location or stop by the shop & check it out there.

Available varieties are as follows: Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Golding, Northern Brewer, Tettnang and Willamette. We may have some similar or different varieties of local, organically grown rhizomes available as well.  We will post info on our website about the local rhizomes as soon as we find out more from that grower.

How to: Here's a link to a rhizome planting & care guide that details in a concise 5 pages how to grow your own hops. We also have a few books and a magazine about growing and using them, like Homegrown Hops by David R. Beach, Homebrewer's Garden by Joe and Dennis Fisher, For The Love Of Hops by Stan Hieronymus and Brew Your Own's Hop Lover's Guide.

A few simple tips: Mostly hops will like a sunny location with well-drained soil. (Around here, adding a little sand to the soil might not be a bad idea!)  It is suggested to plant hops of the same variety atleast 3 ft apart, & different cultivars a good 5 ft apart, so you can actually tell where one vine ends & next begins.

Pricing:  The rhizomes will be $5.95 each, but if you purchase 5 or more the price will drop significantly to $5.00 each. We will order in atleast a dozen of each variety but to make sure we will have what you need, please place your pre-orders by Thursday, February 28th. (Yes that is this coming Thursday!)

For more information, you can visit our brew & wine supply page on our website & scroll down to "hops & rhizomes" or just click the links above.
