A Note From Past President Jim Isaac
The April 11th meeting turned into a fining frenzy involving three past Presidents, our standing President, Donna Dedee, and even the guest speaker, all to the benefit of the Rotary Foundation. The event triggering the fining bonanza began when Past President Jim Isaac listened to Past President Don Alhart, on WHAM radio, as he spoke proudly of the birth of his twin grandsons, Asher and Greyson, born on April 4 to son Jon and wife, Valerie. The announcement on WHAM's, 50,000 watt clear channel radio turned badly for poor Don, a seasoned announcer with 50 years of broadcast excellence, when he couldn't remember the name of the second grandson.

After Don delivered the news at the luncheon, Past President Isaac petitioned him to stand to be recognized for his embarrassing shortcoming. Good sport that he is, Don volunteered to contribute $100.00 to the Rotary Foundation only if it would be matched by Past President Peter Kelderhouse. Peter graciously accepted the $100.00 challenge then rose and fined Jim Isaac for the " Dean's Medal for Outstanding Service" award that his son Ray received at the St. John Fisher School of Business Excellence in Management ceremony at Oak Hill CC. Isaac then sheepishly agreed to match Alhart's and Kelderhouse's fines of $100.00 each, then directed the diner's attention to our beloved President Donna Dedee. Donna, who also attended the same Fisher ceremony as Ray Isaac, was a recipient of the highly respected Fisher Beta Gamma Sigma award for her dedication and volunteer work for the betterment of the Rochester community. President Donna, without hesitation, volunteered to match Alhart's, Kelderhouse's and Isaac's fines of $100.00 each.

Then, to the amazement of all, when guest speaker Marc Iacona, of Simcona Electronics, was being introduced, he asked for a tally of the previous fines, which now totaled $400.00. The assembled Rotarians and guests gasped when Marc volunteered to match all of the previous fines adding another $400 for a total of $800 raised for the Rotary Foundation. A round of applause from the assembled Rotarians and guests acknowledged their approval and thanks to Alhart, Kelderhouse, Isaac, Dedee and Iacona.

Marc then followed with an interesting presentation featuring the now nationally recognized, Rochester Jazz Festival.

PS: (It should be noted that fines of this magnitude are highly unusual and Rotarians accepting a fine are certainly not obligated to participate at this level. Fines of $25.00 are more the norm.)

B2B Breakfast Meeting
"Protecting Your Data & Keeping the Bad Guys Out"

Join us Wednesday, May 10th at 7:30 a.m. in the Rotary Office Training Room for a breakfast meeting hosted by the B2B Committee.
Guest speaker will be Rochester Rotarian Cheryl Nelan, President of CMIT Solutions of Monroe. Cheryl will discuss Protecting Your Data and Keeping the Bad Guys Out.

Your entire business is on your computer. All the data about your clients, your vendors, your employees. You know your business would be lost without it. But, what is the risk that anyone would try to steal it? It's never happened before, so should you be worried about it?  Truth is, it is happening every day to small businesses just like yours.  Thieves have learned that your data is valuable and it is usually not as well protected as the big guys. So, what can you do about it?  How do you protect yourself and all your clients and employees from their data getting into the wrong people's hands?

Attendees will learn what other businesses are doing today to secure their data and protect their clients. The session will get past the hype and give real world examples as well as simple advice to help business owners take the right steps towards improving security and protecting against fraud. It will help owners understand the risks but also give them some ideas for how to manage it within their budgets.

Space is limited so we ask that you please register by clicking on the link below. The cost is $10 per person.

Roberto Clemente School No. 8
Parent-teacher conferences are one of the best ways that a school, a student, and a student's family can come together to evaluate the student's progress, set future goals for the student to attain, and build better communications and relationships with the student's family.

This year, the traditional parent-teacher conference will change at Roberto Clemente School 8: each student will attend and lead his/her own conference twice during the school year. Students will take ownership of their learning, reflect upon their progress, explain areas of strength and weakness, and perhaps most importantly, set goals for both academic and personal development.

In this student led conference, the student puts in a tremendous amount of individual preparation. Unfortunately, not all parents are able to attend their child's conference and listen to how he/ she is doing, and how they plan to do better. That's where Rochester Rotary comes in: School 8 faculty and administration feel that this is such an important endeavor, that when a parent is unable to attend, they are asking a Rotarian to sit in on the conference. Our job is primarily to listen, ask relevant questions, and help the student set practical goals for academic and character improvement.

Conferences will be held on the following dates:

May 22nd - 8th Grade
May 23rd - 7th Grade
May 24th - 6th Grade
May 25th - 5th Grade
May 26th - 4th Grade
May 30th - 3rd Grade
May 31st - 2nd Grade
June 1st - 1st Grade
June 2nd - Kindergarten

There will be two sessions each day: morning 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and afternoons 12:30-3:00 p.m. Can you be available for any day for any amount of time to listen? Is so, please contact Myrna in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x 201 or myrna@rochesterrotary.org to schedule your time.

What is going on in the District?
We are seeking Rotarians interested in being a part of a FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE TEAM for a visit to FINLAND this coming August!

Our district has been invited to send RFE teams to Finland for a period of two weeks from August 15 to August 29th of this year. We are hoping to visit District 1410, which extends to Lapland beyond the Arctic Circle as well District 1420 in southern Finland which includes the beautiful city of Helsinki and the historic Baltic nation of Estonia.

These exchanges are open to all Rotarians and Spouse/Partners (who do not have to be Rotarians). Singles are welcome and encouraged to participate as well.

The Rotary Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotarians and spouse/partners. The RFE provides participants with a cost-effective opportunity to better understand other cultures by staying in the homes of Rotarians in other countries and experience their district. In turn, their Rotarians visit our district and are hosted by our Rotarians. Team members are responsible for their own airfare, some meals, and incidental expenses during the visit.

If you are interested contact RFE Chairperson Carl Grovanz by April 21 at CGrovanz@rochester.rr.com.
