3rd Annual Spring into Reading
with School No. 8

School 8 Logo
On Tuesday, March 21st at the Floreano Riverside Convention Center we have put together an exciting program with our partners at Roberto Clemente School No. 8. If you have not had the chance to go to School No. 8 or volunteer with the kids we are bringing the opportunity to you!

We will be joined by 45 students (ages 7-11) from School No. 8 for lunch and an afternoon of reading (15 minutes) and an update from School No. 8 about ongoing projects and how Rotarians involvement makes the school a better place.

We need at least 50 members to volunteer during the luncheon.

Rotarians are being asked to bring a book with them that the students can take home with them that day. Below is a list of suggested books:

Goosebumps
If you give a mouse a cookie (series)
Magic Tree House
Diary of  Wimpy kid
Hardy Boys
Harry Potter
Berenstein Bears
Dr. Seuss
Junie B. Jones
The Magic School Bus
Disney Books (Frozen, Princess, Super Heroes)
Pinkalicous
Llama Llama

At Kohl's there is always a section in the front (by the register), they do the books of the month where they represent a different author. They are $5 and they are usually really popular kids books.
Rochester Rotary
Euchre Tournament
It sure was cold outside last Sunday afternoon but as Rochester Rotarians and their invited guests arrived at the Rotary offices and began to occupy the training room, one could feel the warmth of good fellowship taking over and filling the room.

Ignoring the 1:30 p.m. official sign in time, several players arrived much earlier to assure that they would not be "left out in the cold" when all of the tables were filled. When the starting bell rang at 2:00 p.m., the final count was 16 tables with four players each, totaling a record 64 players.

We were pleased with the support that we received from three of our area Rotary Clubs; Irondequoit, Webster and Penfield.

After tallying the score for the eight games, the results were presented by official scorekeeper Dick Seils. I am proud to report that my son, Mike Isaac who spent an hour out in the frigid cold directing the parking for the players, was the 1st place winner with a score of 79. Next with a score of 77 and seven wins was Rochester Rotary member Frank Carpenter. For the remaining places we had a three way tie each with a score of 77 but all only winning six games, one less game than Frank Carpenter. In that threesome with guests Tony Magss and Tom Read was Pat Coakley, a familiar name to our members in the Rochester Rotary Club. The low score prize was reluctantly accepted by one of my invitees Donna Dixon. She was somewhat embarrassed but took the "Boobie Prize" money anyway with a chuckle and a handshake. (We won't acknowledge the score here) I must point out that the best average for a husband and wife team was posted by Rotarian Tom and Mary Sue Arcuri. Tom with a 70 and Mary Sue with a 73.

Mark's Pizza arrived right on time and a line quickly formed for that tasty treat, all efficiently coordinated by Rotarian Lee Kirk. Kudos also go out to our Rotary support ladies, Myrna Padilla, Heather Rossi and Brandi Koch. Without their gracious assistance this event would not have happened. We had a great time playing a game that we love and even raised $811.00 for the kids at the Campus.

Respectfully submitted,

Past President Jim Isaac

Local Rotary Peace Fellow Bertin Mboko

Past President Don Alhart shared the following Facebook post with us:

I was very impressed with Bertin Mboko - and I urge my friends and associates to consider interviewing him for any open positions you may have. He is a fine example of the Rotary Peace Scholars Program- earning his Masters Degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution. I would be pleased to share his resume with you and discuss his desire to enter the business world. His ties to his native Africa could be a valuable asset. He is an "American-African" by his own definition and proud of it.

Rotary Friendship Exchange

Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) opportunities this year to host Australia District 9780 and/or travel to Finland District 1410 to 1420

The Rotary Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotarians and spouses. The RFE provides participants with the opportunity to better understand other cultures by staying in the homes of Rotarians in other countries and experience their district. In turn, their Rotarians visit our district and are hosted by our Rotarians.

Australia D9780 will be in our Finger lakes district from May 24th to June 7th. We are asking for volunteers to host one of the 5 couples for one of the three planned sessions from May 24-28, May 29-June 1 or 2, or June 2 or 3 to June 7.

The exchange to Finland will be for a period of two weeks from August 15th to August 29th of this year. There will be the opportunity to visit one of the two Finland districts. We have a limited opportunity to revisit D1410 that extends to beyond the Arctic Circle. Over twice the numbers of requests allowable were submitted for our enjoyable 2012 visit. We will, at the same time, also have an exchange to D1420 in southern Finland and Estonia to satisfy these popular destinations.

Requests for participation in these exchanges will be accepted until March 11th.

Please contact one of our RFE Committee members if you have any questions. Host volunteers have highest priority for future RFE trips and several exchanges will happen in 2017-2019 with RFEs being planned with Australia, France, Germany and South Africa.

RFE Committee members: Helen Gormont, Carl and Linda Grovanz, John and Maureen Hall, Jim Hughes, Bob and Cindy Hunt, Godfrey (Doc) Malchoff, Jean McMillan, Mike and Merle Platt and Vivian Ryan.
What is going on in the District?

If you haven't already signed up, please return the registration form with your payment to Rotary District 7120, mailed to Mary Ann Mady by March 11. There will be no walk in registrations accepted.
