Volunteers Needed!
Roberto Clemente School No. 8
Parent-teacher conferences are one of the best ways that a school, a student, and a student's family can come together to evaluate the student's progress, set future goals for the student to attain, and build better communications and relationships with the student's family.

This year, the traditional parent-teacher conference will change at Roberto Clemente School 8: each student will attend and lead his/her own conference twice during the school year. Students will take ownership of their learning, reflect upon their progress, explain areas of strength and weakness, and perhaps most importantly, set goals for both academic and personal development.

In this student led conference, the student puts in a tremendous amount of individual preparation. Unfortunately, not all parents are able to attend their child's conference and listen to how he/ she is doing, and how they plan to do better. That's where Rochester Rotary comes in: School 8 faculty and administration feel that this is such an important endeavor, that when a parent is unable to attend, they are asking a Rotarian to sit in on the conference. Our job is primarily to listen, ask relevant questions, and help the student set practical goals for academic and character improvement.

Conferences will be held on the following dates:
           Oct. 19 (Grades 6-8)
           Oct 21 (Grades 3-5)
           Oct 24 (Grades K- 2)

There will be two sessions each day: mornings 8:00 - 12:00 and afternoons 12:30-3:00.

Can you be available for a session or an hour within a session to listen? If so, please contact Myrna in the Rotary Office: 546-7435 ext. 201 or myrna@rochesterrotary.org to schedule your time.

If you have ever asked why the success rate of students in the Rochester School District isn't better, here's a way to help make it better. Give an hour or a morning to listen.

Thank you!
Dick Bayer - Rotary - School 8 Committee Chairperson

Volunteers Needed for
Rotary Books for the World

Volunteers are needed for an initiative called Rotary Books for the World (RBFTW). The objective of this program is to take books (mostly text books) that are no longer needed here in the USA and provide them to needy countries in order to improve literacy in those impoverished states. Books are currently being provided to countries in Southern and Western Africa, India, Pakistan, South and Central America as well as other countries.

We are looking for volunteers to sort and pack books that will be shipped from here to Texas and then on to the needy nations. This activity is scheduled for Monday, October 24 and Tuesday October 25 between 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the Rochester City School Districts Book Depot at 835 Hudson Avenue. Please contact Myrna Padilla at the Rotary office if you would be able to take part in this initiative, and tell her what time you would be able to start so that someone can be by the door to direct you to the boxing site. As you drive in through the gate, you will have to say that you are helping with the RBFTW project and go to the door directly back of the entrance.

Please contact Doug Cook if you have any questions. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
