News of YOUR Club
ROC Airport at a Glance

Join us Tuesday, August 30th at the Floreano Riverside Convention Center where our guest speaker will be Mike Giardino, Monroe County Director of Aviation and Rochester Rotarian.

Mike, aspired to be a pilot at a young age watching his dad take flying lessons at ROC. In September 2011, Mike retired as Commander from the United States Navy following a decorated twenty-six year military career which included assignments on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Air Component Command, deployments to Afghanistan, 2,540 mishap-free flight hours and ultimately Executive Officer of Naval Air Station Key West, Florida.

As Director of Aviation at ROC he is responsible for managing a $36 million dollar public commercial aviation facility which approximately 2.4 million passengers travel through annually.

Mike will provide an overview of ROC to include: facts, figures, passenger data, the ROC experience - amenities and conveniences that make air travel from ROC a seamless experience curbside to cabin and highlight the ROC Airport proposal for the Upstate Airport Economic Development & Revitalization Initiative.

Hurd Orchards Thanksgiving Tasting

We hope you will join us Friday, November 4th at Hurd Orchards for a Thanksgiving Tasting event you will never forget.

As the lanterns and candles are lighted and the pot bellied stove in our market glows with warmth our holiday tables are made festive with bouquets and still life and are richly laden with our delicious foods. Our cathedral-like barn, beams warmed with the patina of age, glows with seasonal color. Filled with character and twinkle and feeling, our Tastings are a moment to share the depth of what our farm means. Our tastings have been featured in many articles over the years, most notably in Victoria Magazine in November of 1994 and Better Homes and Garden magazine in November 2004.

The cost is $70 per person and reservations are needed by September 30th. Space is limited so sign up today and don't miss this delicious event with your fellow Rotarians!

Rotary Friendship Exchanges Provide Opportunities to Make New Friends in Every Corner of the World
Exchange participants take turns hosting and visiting one another, forging friendships that last a lifetime. All exchanges are funded by the participants, and hosts are not expected to assume a significant financial burden. Visitors pay their own way, but are rewarded with warm hospitality and an international travel experience unlike any other. On a Rotary Friendship Exchange, you are never just a tourist.

Here in our District, several opportunities are coming up to host and/or visit Rotary districts in the USA and several countries:

Initially hosts are needed for a group of Rotarians from Oregon District 5110 that will be in our district from September 22 to October 5. There will be three sessions of four to five days each. For this opportunity, replies must be in by August 20, and hosts will be assigned to our Oregon guests during the September 2nd RFE Committee meeting.

In the next couple of months we will be offering opportunities for a Rotary Friendship Exchange visit to Scotland from April 30 - May 14, 2017 and early next year we will offer a visit to Finland from August 8 - 20, 2017. In the next year RFE teams will be coming to our Finger Lakes District from Australia, Finland and Scotland, as well as Oregon.

Please contact Doug Cook at 671-4675 or dougfromtor@rochester.rr.com for more information or if you are willing to host any of our Oregon guests. Host volunteers have highest priority for future RFE trips, those exchanges that are scheduled in the next year as well as additional RFEs being planned for 2018 and 2019.
Hosts needed for Governor Elect
Hospitality Program Jan. 2017

Each year in January, District Governors-Elect from all over the world converge on San Diego for the International Assembly. To provide an opportunity for these DGEs to experience life in Upstate New York prior to their training, for the past 45 years, District 7120 and Brighton Rotary Club have invited and home-hosted over 469 DGEs and their spouses from 43 countries.

You can be a part of this program by volunteering to be a host and be instrumental in the continued success of the program. The commitment would be for a four-day period during the second week of January 2017. Expectations of hosts are primarily accommodation and meals and being a tour guide in your own hometown. More specific expectations are in the District website.

Hosting a DGE and spouse for four days in January will create long lasting friendships with Rotarians around the world, and also provide a great fellowship opportunity with our fellow Rotarians in our District.

To volunteer, or if you have questions, please contact Doug Cook at 671-4675 or e-mail at dougfromtor@rochester.rr.com.
