News of YOUR Club
The Century of the Photon

Join us Tuesday, October 13th at Locust Hill Country Club where our guest speaker will be Rick Plympton, CEO of Optimax Systems. During his 20 years at Optimax he has held roles from Quality Manager to VP Sales and Marketing, before taking on the role of CEO.

Optics and photonics are not only current hot topics in the news, but have been an evolving industry in the Rochester region from "Kodak's Brownie cameras to lenses that are now mapping the far side of Pluto,"  said Vice President Joe Biden, referring to lenses from Optimax that took pictures of the planet Pluto on-board the New Horizons satellite. Rick will highlight several applications in the growing fields of optics and photonics. In addition, he will touch on Rochester's role of the Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IP-IMI) and the International Year of Light (IYOL).

TUESDAY LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS

This Tuesday we were honored to welcome a group from our Friendship Exchange with Nova Scotia and fellow Rotarians from the Bloomfield Rotary Club to our luncheon. The group has been spending time in our District sightseeing, experiencing our local history and culture from an "insider's" perspective, and visiting our clubs and touring our projects.

We were also honored to welcome City of Rochester, NY - Mayor's Office Mayor Lovely Warren as our guest speaker. The Mayor discussed how her office and partners in the community and government are working on projects to continue the revitalization of Rochester.

90th Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner

This year's 90th Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner will be Sunday, October 18th at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

This year we are embracing the theme -- "Closer Than Ever..." as we welcome Rotary Foundation Trustee and Chair of Rotary International's PolioPlus Committee, Michael McGovern as our Keynote Speaker.

If you are planning to attend the Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner and can help meet and greet our guests, we need your assistance as a greeter? It's an easy, fun job welcoming those who arrive and in some cases, depending where you are stationed, providing directions into the Convention Center, Reception and Dinner. It's a short job too--most likely lasting from 3:30 until 5:30 pm!

We already have half of the fifteen needed to welcome all attendees into the Convention Center. If you are able to assist, please inform Jeff Bartkoski at [email protected] by Sep 28.

Thank you to Tim and Linda O'Neil for a great Tailgate party at their Canandaigua Lake home.........

........However by the end of the game everyone one was a little sad as you can see above with the lose to the NY Giants.

Rotary Friendship Exchange Program

The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to experience other cultures firsthand, by participating in reciprocal visits with Rotarians from other countries and their families. Last month, District 7120 sent seven Rotarians (including me!) and some of their spouses to Nova Scotia, Canada, for two weeks. As part of this exchange, three Rotarians and two spouses from District 7820 in Nova Scotia are spending time in our District sightseeing, experiencing our local history and culture from an "insider's" perspective, and visiting our clubs and touring our projects.

After visiting the Sunshine Campus on Monday and attending Tuesday's luncheon meeting, they are off to Corning to stay with Rotarians there for several days before returning to the northeastern part of our District for the final days of their two week exchange.
