Rochester and the Finger Lakes:
The Time is Now

Join us Tuesday, March 3rd at Locust Hill Country Club where our guest speaker will be Bob Duffy, President and CEO of the Rochester Business Alliance.  Tuesday's meeting will start at noon to accomadate the annual meeting of the membership.

Rochester native Bob Duffy began as Rochester Business Alliance President and CEO January 1, 2015.  Prior to working for RBA, Duffy served as New York Lieutenant Governor in Governor Andrew Cuomo's administration from January 2011 to December 2014.  Duffy previously served as Rochester Mayor from January 2006 to January 2011 and as Rochester Police Chief from March 1998 to April 2005, when he resigned his post to run for mayor.  He joined the Rochester Police Department in November 1976.

In addition to Bob's presentation we will have an exciting announcement about the new Treehouse at the Sunshine Campus.

We are anticipating this to be a larger that normal luncheon, please RSVP to Brandi in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x210 or brandi@rochesterrotary.org.

President Tracy's Journal

Once again a big THANK YOU to all that contributed to the Sunshine Kids Gala this past Saturday, especially our committee ..... What an amazing evening - we look forward to hearing the final report!

Congratulations to fellow Rotarian Don Milton for winning the Building Bridges Award and fellow Rotarian Chuck Wolcott for receiving the, newly named, Joseph A. Floreano Sunshine Award. We are so fortunate to have Chuck as a member of our Club.  He has gone above and beyond on many project s that happen out at the Campus and his passion, drive, kindness, time and capital translate into this man with a heart of gold. Thank you for bringing smiles to us all through your generosity Chuck.

Sadly Jack Garner, Tuesday's scheduled speaker, was ill (we hope he is getting better) thankfully we were fortunate enough to have fellow Rotarian Jennifer Johnson present to us about Golisano Children's Hospital and Grace's Garden.

Jennifer's tie into Rotary ideals came through loud and clear as she blended together what the Children's Hospital and what the Sunshine Campus provide for children in our community that are in need of support. Not only did she discuss what support is provided but how lucky we are in the Rochester community to have these organizations available.

Jennifer's poise and class came through as she took us on her family's journey starting with the initial diagnosis of Grace's condition and all the feelings, questions and heartbreak that went along with it.

Jennifer and her husband Vinny made the decision to care for Grace here at Golisano's Children's hospital instead of Philadelphia's children's hospital or any of the many other places they had researched. The compassion and personal warmth they received only furthered the right of their choice. Jennifer brought to light the fact that no matter what or where you may choose to make contributions you are impacting the life of another when they are in need. That often gets lost in the give. Jennifer was there to say others contributions to the hospital inspired her and the family during their stay and continue to after.  This encouragement their family experienced through others donations led to their decision to build "Grace's Garden" as part of the new Children's Hospital slated to open in the summer of this year.

Children of Domestic Violence:
Terror, Courage, Resiliency & You

We hope you will join us Tuesday, March 3rd at 8:00 a.m. the Rotary Offices for our monthly breakfast meeting.  We will welcome guest speaker Allison O'Malley, Executive Director of RESOLVE.

More than 1 billion children around the world bear witness to domestic violence and live in homes where adult caregivers fail to provide a safe, nurturing environment. UNICEF calls the impact of children living with domestic violence "the most pervasive human rights violation in the world'. The consequences to children witnessing domestic violence are far reaching, lasting into adulthood and subsequent generations, but there is reason for hope. As spouses, parents, managers and community leaders, find out how childhood domestic violence may be impacting you and people you care about and what you can do to help.

Please RSVP to Brandi in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x210 or brandi@rochesterrotary.org.

B2B Event at Precise Tool & Manufacturing Inc.

Join us Friday, March 6th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a behind the scences tour of Precise Tool & Manufacturing Inc.

The company was founded in 1974, and started off as a quick turn around small parts manufacturer. Over the next few years the business grew and expanded. Precise Tool and Manufacturing Inc. diversified its capabilities and earned its reputation by building special machinery and prototype equipment for several local industries. Throughout this time the company built up its CNC machine tool base to support the efforts of its design and build department. Seeing the potential growth in CNC parts manufacturing Precise focused its efforts in this area and moved to its current location at 9 Coldwater Crescent, starting with 7,500 square feet of space. At this location Precise put on multiple building expansions and new equipment purchases to support its core competency of precision CNC machining.

Reserve your space today by contacting Myrna in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x201 or myrna@rochesterrotary.org.

Participants will be required to sign a waiver form prior to entering the manufacturing floor in addition to wearing safety glasses which will be provided.

For those who are interested, join us for lunch at Rohrbach Brewing Company on 3859 Buffalo Road immediately following the tour.

Rochester Rotary Charitable Trusts
Report

David Ferris, President of the Rochester Rotary Charitable Trusts, gave a report on the fund-raising and financial condition of the Charitable Trusts.  The Charitable Trusts is the tax-free and charitably deductible arm of the Rochester Rotary and is the owner of the assets, including the Sunshine Campus and the quasi endowment.  Several years ago, we embarked on "Keep the Sun Shining" to build our investments to replace the loss of annual income from the ending of our participation in the LPGA tournament.  This campaign raised over $730,000 from members, $574,000 from bequests, $527,000 of cash gifts for specific building projects and labor and materials valued at approximately $450,000.  The investment currently stands in excess of $5.9 million.  The Investment Committee has done an excellent job of stewarding investments.

Based on the nature of the projects and needs of the Sunshine Campus, it was determined going forward not to have a typical capital campaign, but rather to focus on a longer term, ongoing strategy.  This is called the "Forever Sun Shining" strategy.  This includes planned giving, headed by Peter Noto, major gifts/corporate gifts, capital projects, camperships, public relations and marketing and the camp family.

Ken Pink was thanked for his tireless efforts on behalf of the campaign and continuing fund-raising strategy.  Also, Tim Cook was acknowledged for leading the Marketing Committee in helping to rebrand the Sunshine Campus and our logo.  The Marketing Committee has done a tremendous job in helping with marketing materials for fund raising and communications about the Rochester Rotary's charitable activities.

An ad hoc committee headed by Chris Gamble has been appointed to do a five-year projection of our financial needs, including capital projects, to maintain the facilities and the high quality programs we offer with our partners.  While we have made great strides toward replacing the LPGA annual contribution, we recognize that we will need to continue growing our endowment and identify persons and organizations in the community to support the charitable work that we do.  We will be looking to members to assist in these efforts and to be ambassadors in the community regarding the works of the Rochester Rotary Charitable Trusts.  We can all be proud of the excellent stewardship of the resources the Charitable Trusts has been given and the impact we make on individuals and families in our community.

The Rochester Rotary Charitable Trusts will be making additional reports periodically and welcomes any questions members may have.  The Charitable Trusts also thanks those members who have given of their time, talents and treasure in support of our charitable mission.

The Friendship Committee needs your help!

Do you know of any Rotarians who may be  ill?

One of the functions of the Friendship Committee is to visit Rotarians who are confined to their home, the hospital, a rehab unit or nursing home due to a sustained illness.  We have found that they really appreciate a visit.  But we need your help.  We can only make contact with those Rotarians who have been brought to our attention.  So, if you hear about someone who should be seen, please don't assume we know.

Please call Myrna at 546-7435 x201 to convey the information.

Thank you

What is going on in the district?

District 7120 Webinar Series

District 7120 has created this series of webinars so that every club can learn at a pace and time convenient to you and your members.  The webinars will also be recorded and available for viewing for at least 6 months.  You just won't be able to ask questions.

One thing I would like to mention is that while this is the Rotary District 7120 Webinar Series and is targeted specifically to Rotary Clubs, the webinars will be open to everyone.  So if you have a Rotarian prospect and think she or he might benefit from the information, please invite them to participate.  I am hopeful that we can also use the webinars as a recruiting tool.  These webinars will be free for everyone.
