President Tracy's Journal

THANK YOU THANK YOU AGAIN to Jim and Ray Isaac......What an enormous success raising $89,771 during this year's RPO Holiday Gala Pops! Also, thank you to Sharon Stiller for giving us the additional $229 to round our total to $90,000 to benefit our Sunshine campers. We are so very fortunate, as we know, to have such a giving and active club, thank you all!

Join us for our NEXT BIG THING the SUNHINE KIDS GALA...RAT PACK STYLE Saturday, Feb. 21st at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center!

Need a night out? Chinese, Silent and Live Auctions, Gambling, RAT pack era singers and dancing! The evening will be filled with good food, drink and great company for a great cause, so bring family, friends, and clients.....I hope to see you there.

Our speaker on Tuesday, Dr. Jon Schull was a true demonstration on giving back and loving it!

He is a professor at RIT and the founder of e-NABLE, an organization that provides 3D-printed hands to children and underprivileged communities throughout the world. Dr. Schull read a story of a young man that was born without a hand and a couple of people that had come together to make one for him. He began to research the process and in doing so he uncovered that it is more common then he realized to be born with a missing limb and wanted to get a sense of how many children there may be who could benefit from this organization. He set up a Google map where folks could identify themselves from across the world if they were in need of this type of support. He perfected a way to make a 3D hand using a printer and has taught others how to do it as well. Over the year's many people have worked with Dr. Schull to perfect the process and styles that they can provide to different communities. The organization has helped to bring smile after smile to hundreds of people!

Very meaningful presentation and a quick wit Dr. Schull had...Thank Meredith Smith for bringing us this wonderful luncheon program.

Next Tuesday, Feb. 10th we have two exciting meetings going on. First, we will host our monthly breakfast meeting at the Rotary Offices and welcome guest speaker Allison O'Malley, Executive Director of RESOLVE an organization dedicated to eradicating violence against women.  Second, we hope you will join us at the Convention Center to support our newest member class as they host our weekly luncheon. We will explore hands-on activities and hear from a panel about how the Sunshine Campus is getting even better at providing an unforgettable experience for our campers.

Volunteers Needed

The International Service Committee has been asked to take part in a volunteer initiative called Rotary Books for the World.  The objective of this program is to take books (mostly text books) that are no longer needed here in the USA and provide them to needy countries in order to improve literacy in those impoverished states.  Books are currently being provided to countries in Southern and Western Africa, India, Pakistan, South and Central America.

We are looking for a few volunteers to sort and pack books that will be shipped from here to Texas and then on to the needy nations.  The first of these activities for our club is scheduled for Thursday, February 12th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Rochester City School Districts Book Depot at 835 Hudson Avenue.  Please contact Myrna Padilla at the Rotary office at 546-7435 x201 or myrna@rochesterrotary.org  if you would be able to take part in this initiative.
