Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speaker will be Jon Schull, RIT Professor.  A biological psychologist, inventor, entrepreneur, and human-computer interaction researcher, Jon is the creator of e-NABLE, an online community that designs, customizes and fabricates affordable 3D-printed prosthetic hands for children and adults missing fingers and hands.

Tuesday's lunch at Locust Hill was just great!

David Mammano, Founder/CEO,Next Step Education Group talked with us about "Making Sense of Paying for College". He pointed out the reality of college costs today and how you can best prepare your kids for college and be sure they are choosing the right school for their future and skill sets.

There are options that parents and students have to prepare for the college selection process. For example take a test, offered by David's company, to find out what your student may excel at, Intern for a company in the field you're interested in going to school for, or spend time with a guidance counselor.

Of course, grades are important as well as SAT scores. David suggested that if you have received funds from one school but decide to go to another ask the school to match the offer, it's worth the ask! Maybe college is not for your student, consider learning trade. The opportunities are endless for our kids and the cost for college today is high and getting higher, so do your homework and take your time along this journey. Thank you David for a very insightful and eye opening presentation.

This year's Joseph A. Floreano Sunshine Award will be handed out at the Sunshine Kids Gala and this year's recipient is Chuck Wolcott. This award recognizes a Rochester Rotarian who frequently and continuously contributes to the success of the Sunshine Campus.

Chuck Wolcott has been a member of Rochester Rotary since 1998 and has been coordinating, working, volunteering and consulting at the Sunshine Campus for over 20 years. Chuck is the Owner of Wolcott Contracting and Consulting.

Chuck has helped to coordinate many projects at the Campus, just to name a few the Gateway project, Adstaff building addition, Dick Mack Nature Center, Haccamo Train track and platform installation,renovations of Robert Clinger Memorial Miniature Golf Course, Bucky's Splash Pad, building of newest Cabin (Tuscarora), building of new maintenance shop, and most recently the Treehouse project.This list just hits the surface of Chuck's work and dedication to the Campus, his contributions are endless and matched by few others.

The International Service Committee has been asked to take part in a volunteer initiative called Rotary Books for the World.  The objective of this program is to take books (mostly text books) that are no longer needed here in the USA and provide them to needy countries in order to improve literacy in those impoverished states.  Books are currently being provided to countries in Southern and Western Africa, India, Pakistan, South and Central America.

We are looking for a few volunteers to sort and pack books that will be shipped from here to Texas and then on to the needy nations.  The first of these activities for our club is scheduled for Thursday, February 12th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Rochester City School Districts Book Depot at 835 Hudson Avenue.  Please contact Myrna Padilla at the Rotary office at 546-7435 x201 or myrna@rochesterrotary.org  if you would be able to take part in this initiative.

Do you know of any Rotarians who may be  ill? 

One of the functions of the Friendship Committee is to visit Rotarians who are confined to their home, the hospital, a rehab unit or nursing home due to a sustained illness.  We have found that they really appreciate a visit.  But we need your help.  We can only make contact with those Rotarians who have been brought to our attention.  So, if you hear about someone who should be seen, please don't assume we know.
