President Tracy's Journal

This past week's Veterans Day luncheon was one of the most special that I can recall. Thank you to Past President John White, United States Marine Corps, for his talent and production of this extraordinary event.  We started out with Bugler Tom Allen leading the Color Guard, from the Army ROTC Unit at RIT, with "To The Colors" the Pledge of Allegiance and a beautifully written invocation from Past President Peter Kelderhouse, United States Marine Corps.

Past President Don Alhart, United States Army, gave us the news of the day and recognized Jeremy Bagley as our weekly Bright Spot. Jeremy, United States Army, was recognized for his tireless work in Rochester and at Nazareth College for Veterans within our community.

Our "Roll Call" is a great tradition within the Club each year as we recognize each of our Veterans for their service to our Country. What a beautiful highlight and wonderful tribute to members that have given back for our freedom.

Each Veteran member in attendance received a pin commemorating their service in our military. Thank you to the Women of Rotary for helping to pin each of our Veterans.

Past President John then shared details of a project in the works to honor the Gold Star Families within our community. While this project is not known to the public yet I am honored to say a number of our Rotarians are involved in making this happen. John then introduced us to four courageous and amazing Gold Star Families. They had all lost a child in the Military and were giving enough to share their son's stories with us. Rotarians acted as Guardians to each family and stood up to share a sentiment about each soldier and details about some of the amazing projects these families have spearheaded in our community to give back. This was so meaningful I want to thank Jeremy Bagley, Mike Giardino (United States Navy), Peter Glennon (United States Air Force) and Peter Kelderhouse for their touching words.

Lastly Jeff Bartkoski, United States Navy, offered our respect with the Toast to Fallen Comrades:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to direct your attention to the small table to my left

Set for one. It holds a place of honor with us today.

This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that comrades in arms and members of our community are missing from our midst.

They made the heroic ultimate sacrifice and were killed in action.

We call them our fallen comrades.

This small table; set for one, represents the frailty of life for each of us.

The table cloth is black and white.

The white represents the purity of their intentions to serve our country.

The black represents our mourning for our fallen comrades.

The single rose & single candle reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades in arms who keep the faith and cherish their memories.

The sword and gloves are symbolic of our

Respect for all courageous men and women who take up arms to protect our freedom.

A slice of lemon is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate.

Salt is spilled upon the plate to symbolize the families' tears as they mourn their loss.

An inverted wine glass represents the toast our fallen comrades cannot make with us today.

The empty chair reminds us of all the valiant men and women who we have loved,  and lost.

Our hope this afternoon is that they will hear us as we honor them for their ultimate sacrifice.

Please join me in a moment of silence for our fallen heroes and the sacrifice suffered by their families."

I thank all those involved in the planning of this lunch and my words cannot express the gratitude I feel for all veterans here and throughout our Country.

The Friendship Committee needs your help!

Do you know of any Rotarians who may be  ill?

One of the functions of the Friendship Committee is to visit Rotarians who are confined to their home, the hospital, a rehab unit or nursing home due to a sustained illness.  We have found that they really appreciate a visit.  But we need your help.  We can only make contact with those Rotarians who have been brought to our attention.  So, if you hear about someone who should be seen, please don't assume we know.

Please call Myrna at 546-7435 x201 to convey the information.

Thank you

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

The Membership Committee's mission is to grow and sustain the Rochester Rotary Membership. We accomplish this by identifying and recruiting a diverse group of qualified new members and support their initial involvement in the Club.

Each year our Club has a goal to bring in 35 new and dynamic members. At present we have 339 members of our club. Under the leadership of Mary Lewis Consler the committee engaged in a strategic planning process that will help the committee be even more proactive. The strategic plan has a number of sub committees that are listed below:

Under Represented - we have a number of member categories that could use increases.   A good example is military.

Marketing Collaboration - working with our marketing committee this sub group will assist with additional materials that will help with recruitment.

Corporate Membership - this has been a goal for a long time and we will be working directly with each of the larger corporations in this region on corporate memberships. Each new person must pass our membership criteria.

Small Business - this is a specific effort to attract new members that are business owners.

Internal Communications - this effort will see the Membership Committee reaching directly out to other members of our club for  referrals.

You will hear more about these initiatives over the course of the new-year. The Membership Committee is excited about the formation of the Engagement Committee lead by Steve Hoitt.

To recommend a new member please contact Scott Rasmussen at 273-5932.
