President Tracy's Journal

Hello Rotarian's this weeks luncheon was a fascinating presentation by Robert Clark the Dean of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The title was "Cities: The Hybrid Reality" and my goodness what we can learn from the data that lives in the cloud. Robert really touched on how individuals tweets can be used to track areas that  have a high potential of people that were sick based on words being tweeted. Furthermore you could see in real time a map of where those people where in a given city so you could avoid that area. Please note he had great stories and statistics that backed up my very laments description. So tweeter beware " Big Data" is watching! Also a very heart felt congratulations to Mr. Paul DeCarolis for being inducted into the Business Hall of Fame.  Another great example on how we light up Rochester with a touch of Rotary.

Flowers of Fellowship Golf Tournament

On September 24th, the 12th annual Flowers of Fellowship Golf Tournament between the Rochester Rotary Club and the Guelph Club will be held at the Niagara Parks Whirlpool Golf Course in Niagara Falls, Canada.  This is a two person best ball event in which two Rochester Rotarians compete against two Guelph Rotarians.  You don't have to be good - it's 100% handicap and you're playing with a partner; if you don't play that often we'll figure a handicap for you.  We need a few more players to round out our team, ie. we need YOU!  This is not a fundraiser; it's strictly for a good time and a lot of fellowship with our Canadian friends across the border.  Dinner, and it's quite good, is provided, and you'll be home by about 8:00 p.m. or so.  Come and join past Presidents' Andre Godfrey and Ken Pink, Executive Director Tracey Dreisbach, Bruce Baker, myself and several others as we attempt to once again show these Canadians what golf is all about.  Plenty of time for a pint or two after the match as well!  Dick Bayer at richardbayer01@aol.com or (585)586-9228.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

The Membership Committee's mission is to grow and sustain the Rochester Rotary Membership. We accomplish this by identifying and recruiting a diverse group of qualified new members and support their initial involvement in the Club.

Each year our Club has a goal to bring in 35 new and dynamic members. At present we have 339 members of our club. Under the leadership of Mary Lewis Consler the committee engaged in a strategic planning process that will help the committee be even more proactive. The strategic plan has a number of sub committees that are listed below:

Under Represented - we have a number of member categories that could use increases.   A good example is military.

Marketing Collaboration - working with our marketing committee this sub group will assist with additional materials that will help with recruitment.

Corporate Membership - this has been a goal for a long time and we will be working directly with each of the larger corporations in this region on corporate memberships. Each new person must pass our membership criteria.

Small Business - this is a specific effort to attract new members that are business owners.

Internal Communications - this effort will see the Membership Committee reaching directly out to other members of our club for  referrals.

You will hear more about these initiatives over the course of the new-year. The Membership Committee is excited about the formation of the Engagement Committee lead by Steve Hoitt.

To recommend a new member please contact Mary Lewis Consler at 310-7113 or Scott Rasmussen at 273-5932.

What is going on in the district?

Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) opportunity to New Zealand

The Rotary Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotarians and spouses.  The RFE provides participants with the opportunity to experience other cultures by staying in the homes of Rotarians in other countries and experiencing their district. In turn, their Rotarians visit our district and are hosted by our Rotarians.

Our district has been invited to participate in a RFE with New Zealand District 9940 in the lower half of the north island. District 9940 consists of 59 Rotary Clubs and is the best mix of rural and city life including Wellington, the New Zealand capital city.

The exchange will begin with a visit to D9940 for a period of two weeks from February 14 - 27, 2015.  February usually is their most settled weather for the year including long evenings with daylight savings time - our winter is their summer.

There will also be the possibility, for those interested, to consider pre-RFE and/or post-RFE trips to other parts of New Zealand or other stops such as Hawaii for anyone that would like additional warmer weather during our coldest and dark time of the year.

If you have any questions or an interest in participating in the trip to New Zealand, contact Carl Grovanz, cgrovanz@rochester.rr.com or any of our other District 7120
